Such a gorgeous day outside! Last nice day for a while, too. I hobbled on down to make some breakfast.
Protein waffles! Looks like a bow tie, doesn’t it?
After breakfast and checking in at work (there was none), I went out for a short walk. It’s much easier to use the crutches still. John came with and I went further than yesterday, which is good. Also took the plastic off the garden plants. They seemed to have survived the freezing okay. It’s getting greener all the time!
Look – I have my own fiddleheads!
Lunch time was an egg white puff with a ladle of hot sauce on it 😀 I could drink hot sauce.
I spoke with my doctor again today, and it is likely that what I have is not just the muscle pull, but because I still have numbness in my knee and referred pain down the leg – I have a herniated disk in my back, which is what is still causing the sciatica. Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done for this other than time. This means probably about 6 weeks. I can still progress activities as tolerated, but any thoughts of running are going to be at least many days out from now. 😐 Biking may happen sooner, but I still have to walk first (baby steps and all that). I’m not going to let it get me down. I won’t talk about it too much anymore unless something changes.
Latte time included one of my favorites!
I bought a whole box of these Attunes (with coupon LOL).
I still was hungry, so I nibbled on some Bran Buds. Fiber rules!
We tried out our new Coleman portable grill for dinner tonight. Love it! John grilled some sirloin while I cooked a sweet potato. Topped with sweet potato with some of the pecan/maple syrup combo that we had on the parsnips the other day.
This steak was amazing. Local meat just tastes to much better! We don’t have steak too often, and I just love it.
Going out for snack time! Today is free coffee day at Starbucks if you bring in a mug, so we are on our way out the door for that tonight! One thing I like about this Starbucks is that they have ceramic cups so you can get ‘for here’ drinks in them and not waste a paper cup. Of course, I will bring my own if it means anything free! Yay! Will be meeting my mother there and chatting away to start off my weekend.
Have a great night!
So sorry to hear about the disc. Enjoy your chat with your Mom at St.Arbucks.

Glad to hear you are slowly feeling better and able to walk a bit again. Love the gorgeous blueberry waffles!

For someone who has grown accustomed to vigorous exercise, you’re doing extremely well at managing your injury. So many times I read that people are injured and still trying to work out, and I want to reach through the monitor and shake them. (Unless that would hurt.) Good for YOU for 1) taking care of your body, and 2) being A Good Example for the rest of us.

Make sure you get an MRI and speak to an orthopedic surgeon. I herniated a disk a few years ago and my regular doctor just thought I pulled a muscle too. You need an MRI to confirm it and see how serious it is! Also physical therapy can help soooo much!! It worked for me!
🙁

I see a lot of people with sciatica and herniated disks…the more you can keep moving (gentle movements, that is!) the better it will be…take your time, and gentle stretches. 🙂 I hope you feel better soon!

I’m sorry to hear you have more than a muscle pull. Take it easy and try not to do too much to soon but keep moving. I’m heading to VT tomorrow for 4 days so I’m looking forward to seeing lots of fiddleheads. MMMMmmmm…
I have yet to try the Attune Bars, but I have found the Lara Bars are pretty good

Bummer on the disc. I had a similar injury after a car accident. I found chiropractic and massage really got me thru. Enjoy the recovery.
Best,

For what it is worth…I have 2 bulging discs and a torn disc…and a chiropractor has worked WONDERS! I still have my good and bad days…but it has helped A LOT!
Those waffles look…delish!

That’s kinda what I thought it was, from my own experience, and a few others I have known. You are having a lot more pain than I did to start. I had mostly the numbness and tingling up and down both legs.
And you probably know that I completely second what Kel recommended. A back is something you just don’t want to take chances with.
On the positive side, I was doing a walking challenge the summer after my back was diagnosed, and I was walking and running pretty long distances. I actually looked back in my blog to figure out what happened and my second post was titled ‘My Back Hurts!’ But I’m not sure how much I blogged about it after that.
Hey, how about swimming? Do you have a pool available to you. Some of those water classes are really pretty tough too.
Okay, that’s enough advice for one night! Love your food today. I’m gonna investigate local grass fed beef pretty soon.

Oh, so sorry to hear about the disc. My neighbor had that and she got scared and wouldn’t do any activity and it took her a long time to heal. I think if you continue to do gentle exercise like you’ve planned you will be doing your body a favor and help yourself heal. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that this may be worse than you first thought…with your level of workouts, you probably should get your back checked out further, as other commenters have suggested – just to make sure you are on the right path for recovery. Argh, I’m frustrated for you, Lori – it’s SO not fair that you got hurt doing practically nothing…it’s not like you were doing a really heavy deadlift wrong or anything like that – and you are a woman with strong muscles – how crazy is it to hurt yourself so badly by turning around?!?
You may not be whining, but I’ll whine for you!!!
Hope your free Starbies was extra delicious…:)

I am so bummed about your injury! 🙁 Of course, me saying that does not help. Talk about it if it makes you feel better! Feel free to whine away!
I love your garden!

CRAP! That sucks about the injury! Just holding good thoughts that it is way less than 6 weeks! Glad your garden survived too!

Gosh those blueberries are making me swoon!
You are SO lucky that you just need time to recover. I’ve heard so many stories about herniated discs that have been cause for many a surgery.

That sucks Lori: 6 more weeks. I’m sorry for you because I know how much you love your training. Maybe a free coffee tonight at Starbucks will cheer you up.
Have a great weekend!

Sorry to hear about your sciatica. You have a great attitude. You really do. Also, may I ask how you get your lattes to look so good. Just like at at coffee house. I salivate after looking at your lattes.
Your garden looks lovely btw.

6 weeks sucks! Hopefully it’s shorter than that. I mean you’re an athlete and seems pro athletes recover quickly 🙂

So sorry about your injury. You are doing great though and I am sure you will be back to training in no time. Just take care to take the time to heal.
I have never seen the Attune bars here in Canada. I do love the Lara bars though. 🙂

Lori,
You have such a resilient spirit. I’m glad to hear you are not letting this challenge set you back. The mind is as important as the body in overcoming obstacles. Sending you a big hug!
