4-miler and food in bowls

I konked out early last night and didn’t see the end of the game, but I really needed sleep.  I actually got about 7.5 hours and that makes me super happy!   Today was a run day outdoors, so I ate breakfast first while I waited for the day to warm up some.  I cooked up some banana oats with PB and blueberry jam!  Yum!

brekkie1103

I got some McCann’s quick cooking oats and those nutritional are the same as rolled oats.  Not sure why that is, but they cook quicker.  I love McCann’s, too – must be the Irish girl in me 😀

After working for a while and seeing the temp creep into the 40s, it was time to go out for a jog.  I don’t like waiting so long to shower, but I don’t want to do it twice in a day.

Distance:  4.22 miles

Time:  42:57

Pace:  10:11 per mile.

Felt pretty good and I was sweating profusely.  I can’t believe how much I sweat even in the 40s!  I just had a technical shirt and jacket on.  I’m a salty sweater, too.  (Sorry)

I had a fun lunch today.  We have packs of animal crackers and Teddy Grahams from Halloween, so I added some to my lunch – Everybody into the pool!

lunch1103

  • 1/3 cup pumpkin
  • 1 container of Chobani vanilla yogurt
  • Craisins
  • Teddy Grahams

Steady working today and was able to finish early!  Yay, love those days.  My afternoon snack was a latte and one of those granola bars.  While I was making my latte, someone stole my seat….

pix1103

Dinner was a mix of pan sauteed broccoli, chicken, and a laughing cow cheese wedge.  Looks like butter, doesn’t it? 😯

din1103

I realized that all my meals were in a bowl today!

When I was cooking dinner, I grabbed the strawberries and found this:

1berry

Now you all know *I* wouldn’t put back 1 strawberry.  Good thing we had another pound in there 😀

Had a pretty good eating day today.  I did have some cashews and FSTG chips while cooking dinner.  The run made me extra hungry today.

Off to the airport tonight.  John’s mom is coming in for a very brief visit for the next couple of days.   Her flight gets in at 10 p.m.!

Question:  Are you a profuse sweater when you exercise?

Running for me and beer?

Thanks for you comments on my musings earlier LOL! Back to regularly scheduled programming…..

Woke up too early again today.  It was a little after 6:00 and I went to bed  after 11:30.  I really do better with 7 hours of sleep, so why does my body persist in waking up early?  Anyway, I just got up and had an early start to my day.  Cooked up some protein pancakes.  Since I can’t be tall, I thought I would stack my breakfast high!

cakes1029

Again, dark for breakfast!  Weird….

Worked for an hour and it warmed up to about 45, so it was time to get in a run.  I decided on a ‘me’ run today.  I went out without a watch, and just put on the Sweeney Todd soundtrack and let my body tell me how fast it wanted to go.   I sped up when I felt like it and slowed down when I wanted to.  I did 3.2 miles and felt very refreshed afterwards (and super sweaty).  I spent so much time basically since March having  fairly regimented fitness routines to train for all my events, so it feels good now to relax a little and just enjoy flexing my fitness, so to speak.

In my effort to get the cereal out of the house, I incorporated it into lunch 😀  Yum.  There is cereal under there, I promise!

lunch1029

Kat asked for a macro of my ring – and here it is:

ring1029

This is actually now my wedding band.  John and I had channel set diamond bands that matched.  Both of us have had problems with rings being too loose, especially in colder weather.  John had taken to wearing his ring on his pinky, and low and behold, one day it wasn’t there and we couldn’t find it anywhere.  We retraced as many steps as we could think of in the previous day, but to no avail.  John was actually more upset about it than I was.  I would rather lose a ring than lose him, know what I mean?  Anyway, we had been contemplating new bands, and really wanted one with a celtic knot design.  Couldn’t afford the ones we really liked, though.  On a trip to Colorado to visit John’s folks in early 2008, we shopped at ArtMart in Boulder (which is a cool place) and we saw these rings there.  $20 each!  We both loved them and figured they would be good bands in the interim until we can get some gold ones (maybe for our 15th anniversary).  It’s so funny because we both get so many compliments on these rings than we ever got on our other bands. Go figure.

It’s my weekend starting tonight, so John and I had a little celebration:

beer1029

We split this beer – cheers!

weekend

I look so tired in this picture.  Guess that is because I am LOL!  The beer is good.  Hints of pumpkin and spice.  Dinner was a stirfry made with a batata, which is a Mexican sweet potato.  I’ll do a GVE on it tomorrow in detail.  It tastes kind of like a chestnut, but has the texture of a potato.  Kicked it up with some chopped seranno peppers, too.  Bring on the heat! Fun!

stirfry1029

In true weekend decadence fashion, we ate in the living room on the couch with the TV on.  Sometimes it just feels good to be really casual.

I am so happy it’s the weekend!  It feels so great to be free for a couple days.  I am just about done with that soap order.  I’ll finish up the last 2 batches tomorrow.  Then I need to get a couple pumpkins to carve if I can still find some around.

pink1028

Pink item of the day!  Only a couple more days in October for this.

I am going to have a relaxing night with my 10 candy corn kernels, some tea, and Project Runway (if I can stay awake for it….).

I am shaking things up with the football dinner and am having John take me out for breakfast instead!  Hopefully we can bike there in the a.m.

Question:  Do you ever eat in front of the TV?

The day the camera died

(The new power cord arrived this morning, so I am up and running again with my own computer – happy, happy day!)

Rainy day. Got up and it was cloudy, but not raining and J and I were going to go out running. By the time we got dressed and had a prerun snack – it started raining. So, I popped down to the gym and hit the treadmill with pace music for 45 minutes.  Not going to get off schedule!  John went for a walk.  Then I look out the window of my gym and see him outside! He walked all the way to the gym (1.7 miles) and then hitched a ride home with me. Silly guy.

Came home and made Cream of Wheat with a mashed banana and cocoa powder. Topped with some chocolate sauce and toasted pecans. Tasterrific!
brekkie1023
John offered to go to the mall today to shop since it’s rainy – what a great hubby! Returning these to get a bigger size for my niece.
Pink item:

I put on my long rain coat and put my camera into the pocket. As I got in the car and pulled the door shut, I didn’t realize my coat was dangling out the door and I had slammed the door on my camera that was in the pocket. Sad me… the LCD display is cracked and nonfunctional. It takes pictures, but I can’t see what I am taking a picture of. I am so sad! I loved this camera and it was such a bargain when I got it. The same camera now is $40 more. 🙁 What is a food and fitness blogger to do without a good camera? I have a crappy backup one to use until I get this one replaced.

Here are some photos I took not being able to see.

Looky what I saw at Target:

PA240108

Candy Corn soda!  It’s a Jones Soda brand.  I would have bought 1 if they sold single cans, but we would have had to get 6.  I loves me some candy corn, so I was all over this 😀

Hopefully some successful new slippers bought.  We stopped at Starbucks for some coffee:

PA240110

Almost in camera field 😛  Not doing too bad for not having a viewfinder.

John and I had a long talk about possiblities for the future with a new business.  I have to think a little bit about this.  Okay, a lot.  It’s a food-related business (not coffee).  We do so much pondering over coffee.  It’s a good medium for that.

My parents went out to see Jeff Dunworthy (???)  today – (whom I don’t find funny at all).  That meant I had to do a little puppy sitting!

Lizzie says “Hi – aren’t I cute??”

lizzie1024

Now it’s an evening in, or maybe some grocery shopping.  I have batteries charging for the backup camera, so hopefully I can start taking more pics tomorrow.  It’s too hard to guess what is in the viewfinder frame.  I can’t imagine it would be very cheap to replace the LCD screen in the camera.  I just have a tough time with technology, this week was rough between the computer and the camera.

I did finish up an ornament this morning.  I am pleased at how sparkly it is!  It’s going to be purty on the tree. (That 42 you see is my duathlon bib!)

Question:  Where do you do your best chatting/philosophizing/pondering?

5-miler and more crepes!

Gorgeous fall day today.  I wanted to do a run outside and it was in the mid 40s.  Perfect for running.  I wanted to do 5 miles, so I set out for that and fueled up with some POM nectarine that the Pom Wonderful people sent me.  This is really good!  I am not a big juice drinker, even though I really like juice.  As I have said before, I don’t like to drink my calories.  This was for prerun fuel and is tasty.  Much sweeter than regular POM juice – it almost tastes peachy!

pom1022

I was going on the 2nd loop of running and almost thought about doing 6 miles instead of  5, but my thighs were complaining a little.  It really can take a while to fully recover from big events, I guess.

Had a fabulous bowl of cream of wheat this morning after I got back inside:

cow1022

With pumpkin butter, cranberry sauce, cinnamon and white chocolate chips!

Busy with work again.  They weren’t kidding when they told us October is a busy month.  It’s nice to have work.  It was a little sad today, though.  One file was a very long one where the doctors were having discussions with the parents about removing life support on their 11 year old son, and they did not want to do it.  Sometimes the job is tough at times.

I am in waffle sandwich mode again.  This time it was chicken with cheddar cheese, apples and cranberry sauce.

lunch1022

Warm and toasty!  I am liking the waffles for bread.

John made some scrumptious bars yesterday from Megan’s Munchies:

bar1022

Only he used white chocolate chips instead of regular (hence why they made their presence in my breakfast!)  This made a good snack with my afternoon latte.

So, now I am done with the duathlon, and the season of outdoor fitness events is winding down.  It sort of leaves me at loose ends, as I do like to have some sort of goal in mind.  I do have NROLW to finish by the end of the year and then it will have to be more indoor gym stuff.  I do run outside in winter when the sidewalks are clear of snow, but I do have limits 😀

I’m thinking I might try to be serious about knocking off at least 5 more pounds (10 would be super).  I am just not really sure if I want to do the work it will take to do that.  Know what I mean?  I have become pretty complacent here, and with my activity goals I have been pursuing since March – weight loss has not been a primary focus (and was not as feasible with hard training, even though that seems like it would help).  We have just booked a cruise for the beginning of February, and maybe that would be a good goal.

Pink item of the day!

ultramarinepink

(This is soap colorant, btw).

I won the football picks last weekend (Yeah!!) – so it was my choice for dinner.  A new crepe place opened up in Glens Falls just last week, so I wanted to go there.  It’s a very tiny place, and tucked out of the way.  Everything is made from scratch.

I chose a fall-inspired crepe:

crepe1022

Pork tenderloin with mashed sweet potatoes and a blackberry sauce.  It was a little on the sweet side, but quite good.

John had the mexican crepe with black beans, cheese, and chicken.

jcrepe1022

We split a dessert crepe, since the meals were light.  This had whipped cream, praline nuts and cranberry sauce:

praline1022

Thumbs up for this place, and quite affordable.  Okay, I have had cranberries at 3 meals today :O   Somebody smack me LOL!

We are totally inspired to try to make crepes at home.  Maybe this weekend!

Jeez – this post was all over the place, sorry about that!  I swear my mind feels like this right now.  I really have to focus!

Out of the comfort zone

First day of the 3-day weekend!  I decided to get up and run in the cold.  It actually wasn’t bad.  There was no wind, it was just 31 degrees.  With gloves and my turtleneck on, I was fine.  Actually a little sweaty after 2.5 miles.  Funny how I realized that I could have just gone to the gym and run on the treadmill  (that’s what happens pre-coffee, though!).  However, I wanted to get prepped for Sunday’s conditions and be in the cold and out of my comfort zone.

Had some layered blueberry cream of wheat for brekkie when I got back in:

My parents have a new addition at their house as of today!

lizzie

This is Lizzie – the new lab puppy!  She was pretty sleepy.  My mom bought Lizzie a bankie that she said would be perfect for a pink picture!

Regarding the comfort zone:

The comfort zone is a great place to be, isn’t it?  We feel safe and secure and know what’s coming up.  But the only way to progress in anything is to step outside of those boundaries.  Otherwise it is just treading water.  You don’t need to take a flying leap, but step outside and stay there for a little while.  The interesting thing is, you can expand your comfort zone.  Back in the day (last year…), the thought of running for more than 15 minutes during my C25K training sent me into worry and nervousness, but I also knew that the only way to be able to run that far was to do it and do it again.  Now I can do 15 minutes without even batting an eyelash!

The end result of where I am today was a series of steps outside my comfort zone.  These were steps like the Great Veggie Experiment, which has helped expand my horizon of healthy eating; or buying clothes that fit properly and actually wearing them out in public and getting used to being looked at (this is still a little hard); or deciding on a triathlon.  The duathlon this weekend is another event that is outside of my comfort zone, but I am looking forward to seeing what I can do.  So go out there and challenge yourself a little bit – you are probably capable of way more than you think!

Mom and I did a little consignment shopping today.  I dropped some things off, and had to come home with a couple items – then it was off to the cafe!

coffee1016

Plus this raspberry goodness:

cookie21016

Dinner was one of those fun experiments that turned out good!  I picked up some chicken at the smokehouse today, and we had some andouille sausage.  I also had cubed up a sweet potato, and we ended up sauteeing it all with some cajun spice and added a bit of broth.  Cooked until it thickened up into a stew and it was soooo good!

stew1016

It’s like fall in a bowl 😀

I am enjoying my weekend so far.  Might see if I can twist John’s arm to do some raspberry picking tomorrow!

Question:  How often do you step outside your comfort zone?

Taper week begins

The temperature was 28 degrees when I got up to go to the gym this morning.  That’s too cold even for me to bike!  I had to find the scraper to clean off the car.  Then I get to the gym and a sign says it was closed for Columbus day.  Could they not have posted this sign on Friday?  And they were open on Labor day, so not sure what is up with that.  Grrr… today was supposed to be my last strength workout before the duathlon.

Too cold to even want to run outside that early, so I just had some breakfast and got to work:

cow1012

I had a chill for most of the day and wanted a hot lunch.  I used the rest of last night’s chicken and pineapple and cooked up some broccoli, cauliflower and carrots to pair with it.  Just as good the 2nd day!

lunch1012

The sun was out for a while and it warmed into the upper 40s, so I decided to take a break and go out for an easy run.  I actually ran to my bank and back.  Took about 30 minutes, so I am guessing maybe 2.5 miles or so?

Post run snack (latte had with it).  Not too sweaty for a change LOL!

nanarun

I’ve been in saute mode lately.  Made some more shredded brussel sprouts sauteed in coconut oil and topped with craisins.  This sounds weird, but it is a really good flavor.

din1012

Pink item for the day. The knockout rose is still blooming outside, although with several days below freezing, I think it is the last gasp for them.
P6050003-1

Done with work, so it’s time for some relaxing (MNF!!) and trying to be some sort of productive.  I just saw a preview for Where The Wild Things Are.  I love that book so much as a kid, and the previews looks so much like the story in my mind.  I can’t wait to see this!

Question:  Are you going to see Where The Wild Things Are?

Brick and pink pictures.

Happy Tuesday everyone!  Today is my hump day.

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, I am going to take a picture of something pink every day for the rest of October.  Here is today’s item.

PA060029

I flipped my schedule around today and got to work at 7:30 this morning!  It was cold this morning and I just wasn’t wanting to spend the morning out knowing it was going to warm up later.   Not to mention that my upper body is so sore from yesterday!  All up and down my sides – it’s crazy! So, I had some of this:

PA060016

Yum, cafe au lait.  Plus some warm banana oats:

PA060011

A couple hours after lunch, I was ready to do my brick!  John joined me, so we did a bit of a stop during the bike ride.  We rode for 8 miles to Cool Beans and had a bit of fuel of a biscotti and coffee.

cb

I love training days that are relaxed like this!  If only I could stop for coffee on race day 😀  We then biked home and I went out for a 2 mile run.  It felt pretty good.  I am really getting used to the transitions again now.

It was weird exercising in the middle of the afternoon, though.  One thing I do like about my job is the flex time option.  I just need to work for 1 hour at my scheduled start time, then I can flex the hours if needed as long as I finish my work in a 12-hour window.  Can’t do that with an office job!  I just wish it paid better.

Dinner was one of my staples!

dinner

Familiar and satisfying.

Twin Peaks on DVD tonight – how about that for a flashback!  I love Netflix.  I am a film noir lover and it’s great to find those old gems.

Recently enjoyed movies:

  • Rope
  • MST3K (tons of these)
  • The Woman in The Window
  • Run Fat Boy Run

Mini duathlon and french toast!

* Final challenge check in tomorrow!!*

Thank you so much for the congratulations on our anniversary!  😀

I decided to try the full format for the duathlon today of run/bike/run.  The temperature was pretty much perfect outside – mid 50s, although a little wet.  I was not feeling very hungry this morning after dinner last night, but I thought I should have a little something before going out.  Mini wheat pita toasted with some peanut butter.  Yum!

pita

I did a 2-mile run first, and decided that Indian food is not a good precursor to having a good workout.  I was definitely feeling bloated and heavy this morning.  Not the best of energy.  I purposely did not wear a watch today knowing that I wasn’t at my best before I even left the house.  Got back home, quick put on the helmet, slugged some water, and hopped on the bike.  I then did a 4.5 mile circuit.  Got back in the driveway and drank from my water bottle.  I had given it a squeeze while drinking and felt a sudden gush of water on my front.  I had actually snapped off the entire top of the bottle where the lid screws on.  I don’t know how that happened!  (Must be the lifting LOL).  I almost went running again with my helmet on because I got distracted with the water bottle – that would have looked dorky around the neighborhood…  2nd run was another 2 miles.  I was feeling kind of tired by the end and slow.  The real deal will be plugging another 12 miles of biking into this!  At least I know what the transitions feel like all around.  Run to bike is not bad.  Bike to run, still not my favorite.  I need to keep my bike mileage up in the next couple weeks.

I got this bread from Nature’s Pride yesterday as part of FoodBuzz Featured Publisher program.

naturespride

I decided that a new breakfast was in order – French Toast!  Can you believe there is no oatmeal anywhere?  Well, I guess it is one of the grains, but who’s counting?

ft3

  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 slices of Nature’s Pride 12-grain bread.
  • Strawberries

This was delightful and oh so good!  This bread is hearty like many whole grain breads and didn’t get all soggy and fall apart when dipping into the batter.  That is usually the big problem with reduced calorie breads.  Each slice of this bread is 110 calories, but really worth it taste wise.  Although, the marketing of 14 grams of whole grains per slice irritates me.  That translates to 2 grams of fiber.

Good things – no preservatives and no HFCS!   Thank you Nature’s Pride!

Ever have those day’s where you just rock and roll?  I whipped through work today and finished just at dinner time.  6.5 hours and I did all my files.  Wish I had more days like that.

Someone who was not productive:

baby

I have never seen a cat that sleeps this much.

Now my evening is free!  I need to make sure I am productive and not wasting this free time.

I had a ginormous dinner:

din

One of my patented stir fries 😀  I had about 2.5 cups of cauliflower and broccoli in this with 3 ounces of chicken.  Very filling.  I needed it because this morning’s workout burned 600 calories!

Is this not the smallest clementine ever?  It’s about the size of a golf ball.

clem

The taste was pretty disappointing.  Kind of weak and bland.  Hope the other 3 pounds are better!

Question:  Do you live in an area where there is fall leaf color?

7-miler and views of myself

After last night’s Reeses throwdown (which I lost), I knew I needed a little extra boost on the exercise front today.  Not to mention my football dinner 😀

I wanted to go at least 6 miles.  Had a Zone Fudge Graham bar to start with.  Bars and bagels really and truly are the best preworkout fuel, although yogurt smoothies come in a close 2nd.  I did a daisy loop around the house.  A newly mapped 2 mile run, which turned out to be way more hilly than I thought.  I was a little tired from that, probably because of yesterday’s workout.  I wound back to home, drank some H2O and did a 3 mile loop.  For whatever reason, around mile 4.5 I got an energy boost.  Back at home for more water and then another 2 mile loop.  7+ total today.  I didn’t wear my watch.  I have decided that on long runs where I have a set distance to go, I don’t want to know the time.  It’s depressing to look down and see 20 minutes and know that I have more than 45 minutes left, you know?  I figure I will be done when I am done.

In the spirit of Operation Beautiful – I am showing that I am beautiful when I am sweaty!

Had super delicious oats when I returned.  John cooked up one of the pie pumpkins last night in the pressure cooker and here is some fresh pumpkin!

Take *that* Libby’s!!

Added to my oats with a tsp of brown sugar and cinnamon and topped with cranberry preserves.

So fresh tasting and yummy!

I am trying to think of ways to organize my blog into more helpful posts other than just me blabbing on about food and fitness of my own.  I am not sure if 2 posts a day is better or just 1.  I don’t like to overwhelm readers and I am not sure if it is better to have 2 shorter posts or 1 really long one as I am doing currently.  Any thoughts on this?

Yesterday I was talking with John over breakfast about the view I have of myself.  I had looked through some old pictures the other day and it is so weird seeing myself at 250 pounds in photos.  I almost don’t recognize myself in them.  However, I also look at photos of me now and think “Do I really look like that?”.  When I see myself in the mirror or look down at my legs, I have that sort of mix of still feeling heavy, yet feeling smaller.  I don’t know if I can describe it and not sure if any of you get what I mean.  Maybe it’s a feeling that is magnified by how much weight one has lost.  I said something to John about being chubby, and he said I wasn’t chubby at all.  In fact he called me a healthy dynamo, which kind of made me laugh.  Makes me think of this:

spinningtaz2

John asked how long it would be before I saw myself as I really am, and I don’t know.  It’s like not seeing myself as an athlete, but I think I am a bit of one.  Certainly not of a professional caliber, but one nonetheless.  I really don’t know how to correct that way of thinking, either.  I don’t view myself in any negative light and actually tend to be kind of clinical in how I look at the areas that I think need improvement. Maybe that isn’t really a bad way to think, I don’t know.

I spent the majority of 40 years being overweight and maybe it will take 40 before I get used to seeing me as I am LOL!

Well – it was my football winning dinner tonight!  Decided on downtown Glens Falls and stopped at Prima.  Yum.  They normally aren’t open for dinner on Thursdays, but tonight was a special night.

I had a delicious panini made on artisan wheat bread, turkey, brie, sprouts, and cranberry chutney.  So good!

prima

After dinner we walked around downtown.  Prima was open because it was opening night of balloon fest weekend!  (Guess you know what kind of pictures are coming up in a day or so 😀  ).

They let us walk inside this balloon.  Here is a view from the inside out!

Dinner out tonight, so I wanted to do a longer run  to assist with that LOL.  Fueled up with some POM coffee.  This is good for fuel.  Goes down easy and has 7 grams of protein!

Wish I could report on how well it lasted because my run got waylaid by this after 2 miles:

P9170003

Found this little guy on the side of the road, very cold and weak.  I noticed a tiny puff on the ground as I was jogging.  At first I thought he was dead, but as I got next to him, he lifted his head and tried to get up.  So – I of course had to stop the run and bring him home.  He perked right up and found his voice after some mush food and warmth.  I don’t know if he wandered from someone’s house or if he was dumped.  He is about 4 weeks old and too small to have gone far on his own.  He is pretty dirty, so I am thinking he was unwanted 🙁  or just feral.  If he was owned by someone, he is in terrible shape.

Anyone want a kitten?  We can’t keep him – it’s bad enough to have the one we do with John being allergic.  Local no-kill shelter is full.  I’m trying hard to find him a home.

That cut my run short, so I just stayed in for breakfast.  The Silver Palate oats again, this time cooked with a banana.

oats

Love these!  They are halfway between rolled oats and steel cut.

I ended up going out before lunch after I finished my files to do the rest my run.  I did 3 miles the 2nd time, so somewhere around 5 to 5.5 miles today. How’s that for dedication?  😀

If you haven’t seen the FoodBuzz blog nominations, please feel free to nominate my blog if you like 😀

I’ve been feeling great about my lifestyle this month.  I am doing well towards my personal challenge and it feels good.  It’s funny how when you are a much lower weight a few pound loss really is noticeable – whereas when I was 250 pounds, you couldn’t tell.

So, John and I do football picks each week, and the loser of the picks has to buy the winner dinner out.  I lost this week (by 1 game), and John’s pick was Raul’s Mexican.

raul

This place does not give free chips and salsa (thank you!!).  So we started by splitting a quesadilla:

All the meat is grilled here and has a wonderful flavor.  I had the Oaxacan tacos, which was grilled chicken, caramelized onions, mole sauce and lettuce and soft shell.  A bit of sour cream on top.  So delicious and flavorful!

taco

John had fish tacos, and the fish of the day was swordfish (also grilled)

fish

We walked around town for a while as it was an art walk.  Then we stopped for a coffee – and I managed to not have any of the baked goods!

Got home and fed the little guy.  For a tiny thing, he has a big mouth with constant meowing.  I hope he makes it.

Fellow first time triathlete coming up!  Wish PTG good luck!
