Hair cuts and omelets!

Hey there!  Waving *hi* to all the new readers, there’s a lot!  Please say hi in the comments or send me an email 😀  Hope you stay for a spell.

The start of the weekend for me.  I actually slept until 7am this morning.  I decided to have a nice long workout today with an exercise buffet:

  • 20 minutes on the stationary bike (see, Debby??)

Lifting workout:

  • Chin ups:  1 set of 3, 1 set of 2, 1 set of 2
  • Barbell split squats:  3 sets of 8 at 65
  • Incline dumbbell chest press:  3 sets of 8 with 25# dumbbells
  • YTWL:  3 sets of 8 with 10# dumbbells
  • Lunges:  3 sets of 8 with 35# bar
  • Lat pull down:  3 sets of 10 at 60 pounds

Then I hit the treadmill for 2 miles of walking and 1 mile of running with speedwork.  It was nice knowing I didn’t have to hurry to get back to go to work!  John met me at the gym and he took me out for my football meal.  We went to Maude’s and we couldn’t have gotten there soon enough.  My arm was looking pretty tempting by this point.  I wanted a good protein hit, so I had a 3 egg cheese omelet.  I ate everything on this plate!

So. good.  We had some strange salt and pepper shakers at our table.

Not sure what’s going on at Prince Edward Island, but it can’t be good …..

This was a pretty late breakfast (1o am), so I never ended up eating lunch!  You know I don’t skip meals, but I also don’t want to eat just because. So, I got other errands done.

One of my New Year goals was to do something with my hair.  I haven’t had it cut in about 11 months, since I was trying to grow it out.  Well, not sure I was liking it, so I went and had it trimmed up and shaped.

This way I can decided to keep growing it, or cut it back to short again.  She took off probably 3 inches!  That’s a bit more than a trim.  I have to say that I love it 😀  When I got back, it was snack time!

Plus this:

Okay, 2 of those…..  This has not really been a stellar eating day.  I took some time catching up on emails and my google reader!  Whew.

I mentioned the word ‘pizza’ near dinner time, and John was all over that.  We walked to get a slice.  This place down the road has a deal for a drink and 2 slices for $4.50.  We each eat 1 slice because they are pretty big. Talk about a cheap date!  I usually bring my own bottle of water since I don’t drink fountain drinks.  I got in the requisite broccoli on my slice

Mmmmmm…….

I am actually getting the protein powder post ready to go.  It will be up some time tomorrow.  Sorry for the delay!

Doing some R&R tonight.  I think Pixie has the right idea:

Giveaway for the Lose The Diet book ends on Sunday!

FYI: This was the charity I donated to for Haiti victims: Medical Teams International

Question:  Any fun plans for the weekend?

Blood donation and chilly run.

Woke up this morning and it was again 32 degrees!  I was going to run outside as I don’t like to drive to the gym just to run unless it is precipitating horribly outside.  So, I made some fantabulous oats for breakfast and got right to work:

oats

40 grams of oats, 1 medium banana (part cooked in, a few slices for garnish), blueberry jam, peanut butter.  (Note  it was dark out when I made these, too early).  So freaking good!  Some days food tastes even more amazing, and this was one of them.  Maybe because I was hungry, but not starving like after a workout.

Worked until 10:30 and saw the temp was getting close to 40.  I knew it probably wouldn’t get much warmer, plus we had afternoon stuff scheduled, so here I was contemplating the thought of being cold!

….. nice camera……

I am just a wuss, because the cold only lasts about 10 minutes, then I get hot and sweaty when running, even in almost freezing weather!  3.2 miles of sweaty goodness, although I should have snacked before I went out.

Had a fun lunch of Total Blueberry Pomegranate (love this stuff!), lowfat vanilla yogurt and a chopped kiwi.  I have never had kiwi on my yogurt cereal mash before, and I liked it.  😀

After more work, we took a break to donate blood.  It was lickety split because no one was in line, and my veins were really fast today.  I don’t even think it took 1/2 hour from start to finish at the snack table.

My iron was at 15.4  – Broccoli and chicken rock!!  My iron was higher than John’s LOL.

Afterwards,  I had a bottled water and 1 Lorna Doone (my favorite post donation cookie).

dooneDidn’t want the whole pack because we went out for a latte at Cool Beans, where I spotted my pink item:

I chose a skim latte and it was tasty.

Not too hot, either.  Most times, coffee shops make the lattes hotter than the sun and I burn myself.

Did more work before dinner and then wanted more fall-themed goodness:

dinner1027

Chicken on wheat bread with Cabot reduced fat cheddar topped with cranberry sauce (toasted).  Plus more broccoli – go iron!!

I’ll be working late tonight since I flexed time to donate blood and have coffee.  Plus I have to make more soap.  Busy!  Sitting here snacking on some unpictured cashews while busting out this post.  I admitted them back into the house after being banned for a while and maybe it was too soon.  I’ve eaten too many today.  Think I will put them in the freezer.

PSA:  Don’t forget to donate blood if you are eligible!  It’s a little inconvenient, but you can save up to 3 lives with each donation.  I hope that whomever gets my blood will get a little bit of radiance. 😀

I also found out that it takes 5 days for your body to replace the red blood cells that you donate.  Ooopsss… I have a race on Saturday (weather permitting).  Might be a little slow – or at least that is my excuse and I am sticking with it!

Tomorrow is biking to bagel day, hopefully.  Catch you on the flip side!

Sunday eats

Rest day today!  My legs really need it.  I was feeling a little bummed looking at last year’s stats for the duathlon.  It looks like I will likely come in last or close to it compared to last year’s times.  Of course, the reality is that I am not competing against anyone.  I keep telling myself it is okay, and I know it is, but it still bothers me a little.  Anyone know what I mean?  At least I have endurance even if I don’t have speed.  I know that athletes train for years to get good at their sports, and I have just started running about 1-1/2 years ago and serious biking for a couple years.

My body wanted carbs today! We drove to Panera instead of biking since I needed a rest day and we needed to grocery shop.  French toast bagel and coffee!

panera

Got to work right away.  My new account is full of files to do.  It was a little depressing as the chunk I have been working on most of the day is the neonatal intensive care unit.  Very sad.

Lunch break of Bumblebee tuna sensation.

tuna

This was quite good.

lunch

Plus an absolutely delicious Macintosh apple.  Ironic that the apples came from an apple orchard that we biked by yesterday!  Maybe that is why it tasted so good.  Wonderfully fresh.  Makes you realize how eating local really can make a difference!  We are hoping to go out apple picking soon.

I have already lost the football picks this week…. boooo!  That means I have to take John out to dinner again.  😛

I had a coupon for a Larabar, which I like but normally don’t buy because I can make them and they are a little spendy.  I tried a new flavor:

lara

Yummy!  Very clovey.  Wonderful paired with my latte.

My folks came over to watch the Broncos/Cowboys game.  Pixie says “Time to stop working, mommy!”

pix

She loves to lay on this footstool, no matter what is already on there!

John made a delicious chili for us to eat while I worked.  I love my hubby!  He used ground beef, white beans (no kidney beans thankyouverymuch), onions, crushed tomatoes and spices simmered in the crockpot all day.  I had mine with some pan sauteed brussel sprouts and strawberries.

After dinner, I had a tiny sliver of a fresh pumpkin pie that John also made (is he amazing, or what??).  I love fresh pumpkin.  Celebrating a Broncos victory!  (Sorry Dad!).

Overall very pleased with how I ate today.  Sundays are very difficult for me, but maybe it was because I got my snacky day done on Friday 😛

New stage for NROLW tomorrow.  Eeeek!

Question:  Do you go apple picking?

NROLW and losapalooza.

Hello everyone!  Back to lifting!

lifter

Started with a preworkout snack:

kbarNo more of these for preworkout fuel.  They are just too weeny.

Today started stage 5 of New Rules of Lifting:

  • 1-arm dumbbell snatch:  4 x 4 at 25 pounds
  • Single leg dumbbell dead lift:  4 x 4 at 30 pounds
  • Bent over barbell row:  4 x 4 at 75 pounds!
  • Incline dumbbell bench press:  4 x 4 at 25 pounds
  • Overhead dumbbell squat:  4 x 4  with 15/30 dumbbells
  • Plank:  3 times with 2 minute holds
  • Reverse woodchop:  4 x 4  at 50 pounds
  • Body weight matrix (it’s back!!) 3 sets

Holy crow.  I went ahead and did 4 sets on most everything, as the  recommendation was 3-4 sets.  Less reps, more weight.  I tried to use 30# dumbbells for the incline press, but I couldn’t quite push them up, so I had to back down. I can’t seem to get past 25# dumbbells on these.  I think I need the barbell for stability and will try that.  The body weight matrix – I forgot how freaking hard that is!  My legs were shaking so much after I got done that I nixed any treadmill walking, since I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to bike home!  Phew.  I am thinking my legs may dictate tomorrow’s workout 😀

I was ravenous when I got home and had  a genius idea!  Chocolate protein pancakes with banana/PB2 topping:

cakes

Pancakes were 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup cottage cheese, 1 egg, 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1 teaspoon cocoa powder.  Blended in the Magic Bullet.

Topping:  1 serving of PB2 mixed with an extra teaspoon of water and then I mashed a small banana into it.  Tres delicious!  Really ripe bananas are best for this.

On a side note: Here is a link to the Apple Crisp recipe from the other night:  I had left out the nuts and the lemon juice.  I also used a couple teaspoons of tapioca with the apples just to make sure it wasn’t watery.  Not sure if you really need that or not.

I am very pleased with how I ate yesterday.  Pretty much on plan, plus I got in some exercise.  Normally Sundays are my rest days, but I rested Saturday instead.  Maybe that was the difference?  I don’t know.  Should have a good report for the challenge tomorrow!

Kind of a leftover day eating wise.  Dinner was some of the clam chowder from the other day.  Just as good ‘aged!’  With some delicious strawberries.  Isn’t it funny how some boxes of strawberries are divine and others are blah?

dinner

Went for a walk after dinner to hopefully keep my legs from being too sore tomorrow, but I think that might have been an exercise in futility.  My hope was to do a run/bike brick, but not sure if my legs will be able to make it!

Came back to dessert:

crisp

1/4 cup of plain lowfat yogurt and 1/4 cup of apple crisp.  Yum!

Challengers, we will be checking in tomorrow!

Recovery day and too much food.

Did an active recovery day today.  It’s really hard for me to rest.  I somehow feel like I am going to gain 100 pounds back over night if I don’t go/go/go.  Know what I mean?

So, I did 500 yards of an easy swim, then sat in the therapy pool for 15 minutes.  That was a luxury.  I positioned myself so the jets hit my low back, and then my thighs.  Mmmmmm…….  Then I dragged myself out to walk around the track for 30 minutes.  I kept wanting to break into a jog (what is wrong with me??).

John met me for breakfast after this.  Ridge Street coffee for ….. wait for it….

bagel1

Plus some of this:

coffee

It’s my Friday work-wise, and it was hard to go back home and get to work!  I do not take enough relaxing mornings.  So glad it is the end of the work week for me.  I kind of feel like Pixie did today:

pixie

I definitely got the snack attack today.  I don’t know what it is about my rest/recovery days – but those are the days I really *should* be limiting my calories, and yet those are the days I have the hardest times controlling my eating.  I cannot figure it out.    The one thing I am looking forward to about doing after the triathlon is getting back to the weight loss zone for the last 10 pounds.  That is an arena I am very comfortable with.   The training is still so weird to me, even though I have been doing it for a few months now.

So, in being honest – here was dinner.  John and I split a calzone with some feta cheese from a local place (they are fabulous, too).

Question:  How do you handle rest days?  Do you find a pattern of days that you are hungrier than others?
