Solo lake ride!

My biking partner is out of town this weekend and I wanted to go to the lake, so it was solo riding for me!

When I told John that I was going, he said, “Please be careful.”   Now, anyone who knows me IRL (and even on the blog) knows that I am about safety first.  I might actually be a little too cautious sometimes.  I trust no one when I am on my bike.  Not even the squirrels darting about.  So, I laughed and said back to John, “I am always careful.”   His response? “I know, but it makes me feel better to say it to you.”  <3

I ate an early lunch and checked over the bike, filled the tires, checked the chain and brakes and headed out.  It was wonderfully sunny and warm – in the low 70s!  I did have a lightweight jacket on at first because I wasn’t sure if it would be cooler at the lake (it usually is), plus the wooded part of the path can be cooler as well.  Except I forgot there were barely any leaves on the trees and the wooded parts were pretty sunny!  The first 6 miles or so were on city roads until I got into Glens Falls and got onto the bikeway.

I ditched my jacket at this crossover of a road from the path.  I always feel like there should be donut and candy shops on this road, but there aren’t.

Starting to sweat!

A couple miles later, I realized I had better put on sunscreen.  I probably was blinding anybody I went past since my pasty white arms have hardly seen the light of day since last fall.  So I pulled over to put that on.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m a ghost in this.  I didn’t see my own reflection until I downloaded this 😀

This is the marsh.  It’s still pretty brown.

I was curious as to how my hill legs would be for the first lake ride of the year.  I  made it up all the climbs pretty easily and I am totally thrilled at how good my legs are already.  I don’t know why that is or how to duplicate it next off season, but I’ll take it now!  This is the wooded part of the path.  No leaves!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was cut through rock in some parts.  Not sure why people feel the need for graffiti, but they do.  There are a lot of flags painted on this rock for whatever reason.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was happy to reach the lake at mile 16.  It was particularly blue today.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All of the shops on Beach St. are closed right now.  They only open up for tourist season.  Not to mention the road is being repaved right now.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The main street has a fair number of open businesses.  Those ones run by locals and not people from downstate who only come up for summer.  There were not a lot of people around, but some.  The stores were having sidewalk sales and 2 new stores opened that sell only purses – the same store with one location on each side of the street.  Really? I own 1 purse (and I hardly ever use it), so that business won’t make it with my support.  I stopped at the Lake George Baking Company for my treat and Cafe Vero for my latte to go with and sat in Shepard Park.

snack

I love Cafe Vero. They roast their own coffee and the baristas are well trained.  They always do latte art.  It’s a bit pricey, but worth it.

My view while nomming:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I texted John to let him know what he was missing!   😈

Then it was time to say goodbye to the lake and head on up the mountain.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a 2 mile climb for a while and so I didn’t stop to take any pictures.  I did stop more on this trip in general just to enjoy, though.  By myself – I can do whatever I want and stop whenever I want!  After the 2 mile climb, you are greeted by Santa and Uncle Sam.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ah yes.  Lake George, the mix of natural beauty and the tacky.

I took part of the canal path on the way home.  Some of this is being worked on, so we have to detour around it, but I got on part of it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Closer look at these guys jetting away when I stopped.  Can you see them in the pic above?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Before I knew it – I was home!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

33 miles today that felt great.  I am ready for Saratoga now.  I have the mind rumblings to do a 100 mile day again.  😀

Have a great rest of the weekend and I will be back with an AIM post on Monday!

First cupcake ride!

Well, glad to be back.  There was a domain registration snafu over the weekend.  Of course it would be over the weekend and tech support was nonexistent.  So, my apologies for anyone thinking I just disappeared – and thanks for people emailing and on FB checking in to let me know.  Nice to know people care  😛  Community hugs all around!

Anyhoo – we had the most fantastic weather weekend around here.  Just fabulous! So, that meant some good riding happened.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Me and new helmet ready to ride!  I finally got my straps adjusted right after the first part of the ride – you can see them sticking out funny in this picture.

We headed down to Schuylerville as I wanted to take John to the place I took my sister a few weeks ago.

It was in the  low 60s, so I had on a couple layers, but the sun was shining and it was so nice to be out!  We stopped at 8 miles in on route 4 at our usual rest stop along the canal.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I told John to wave hi to the nice people!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I just loved the sky.  Spring is finally here!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Now it just needs to get a little greener.

We zipped on down to Schuylerville.  We were averaging 14 miles an hour, which is good for our hybrids!  We arrived at EspressoHuis at around mile 13.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love that they showcase local artists and have a local baker do their baked goods.  This horse is pretty cool.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had a raspberry almond cupcake and a latte:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We sat out on the huge deck out back and enjoyed the weather.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Isn’t this a cool place to have a cuppa?

We had a fairly uneventful ride home, but did stop to take some pictures of burros!  One of the local farms now has them.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

They are for sale, too.  Maybe I will ask for one for my birthday

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We decided to give one of our tough hills a try to see how the early season legs are.  The McIntyre Hill.  It’s at the very end of the ride when we go this way.  When I first started climbing, I did not think I was going to make it.  I was in almost the lowest possible gear and I was talking to myself pretty hard to get to the top (expletives included).   We both made it, barely!  But yay!!!  One of those times when I wish I had a heart rate monitor, although it probably would have exploded.

Quite pleased with the ride overall.  In fact, we got in over 50 miles of riding this weekend.  Woot!  Next week will be Lake George and those hills.

And to end, as promised, here is one of my guitar videos I made this month.  You can watch it on youtube here or below.  It’s about 3 minutes.

It took a lot of takes to get one I was fairly happy with LOL!

Riding and cleaning up the garden

Not the best weekend for riding, but we did manage to get in a bit.  Things are almost starting to feel like spring around here.  The trees are starting to get some buds.  The gravel path is still too wet to ride on, seeing as it was pouring rain on Friday.  There was also rain in the afternoon forecast and it was in the upper 40s, so we decided to keep closer to home than planned.

Street riding until we got to the path after 7 miles.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is right by our froyo shop that we like to visit.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Too cold for yogurt yet, though.  At least for us.  These people were out for ice cream!

We headed down the path.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Our plan was to get in around 20 miles for the day, so we headed out to what we call Decision Point to turn around.  This is about 5 miles from Lake George and the beginning of the hilly section. Mile 10.5.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It climbs for around 3 miles and then there is a 2 mile zoom downhill into Lake George Village.  From here, it makes no sense to do anything but go all the way to the Lake or turn around.  We decided to turn around here.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

John says “Coffee Time??”   I say “YES!!”

We biked back to Glens Falls to Coffee Planet.  We spend a lot of money time at this place.  Bikes securely locked together and to the pole.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I also dropped and cracked my helmet on the bricks.  Now I need a new one.  👿

Downtown Glens Falls.  Very quaint.  This was around mile 15 or so.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had a black and white cookie with my coffee.  I love the black and white cookie!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

John had coffee cake.  Our treats were touching on this plate, but that’s okay in the dessert world.

It was clouding up on our way home and I have to say it was pretty windy.  I was sweating from the work into the wind- even though it was only in the 40s.

Another ride in the books!

No ride on Sunday as it was cold and windy.  However, we did get a lot of outside work done.  We tackled the bushes on the side of the house, which was a total bear thank to some neglectarino neighbors.

I got the garden bed cleaned up.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The only thing I haven’t done is trim the butterfly bush down because I like how it looks for now, but when it starts to bud at the bottom, I will cut it down.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Lots of bulbs coming up. Yay!  My shadow looks like it’s chugging a beer, too 😀

Warmer weather coming this week – woo hoo!

Weekend Ride and March Wrap Up!

50 degrees means bike riding!  I only needed a few layers today.  😀   I dare anyone not to notice me in these colors!

me

I wanted to get in a 20 mile ride today.  Need to ramp up mileage fast if I am going to get in 2500 this year.    The gravel part of the bike path is still soggy, so it was mostly road riding.  Lovely intersection near the path.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then John took the lead and went where I wasn’t thrilled about going.  Too much traffic on this road in the afternoon for me.  Normally we ride this early Sunday morning when we bike to Panera Bread and it is pretty empty.  Not on a Saturday afternoon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After getting into Queensbury, we hooked onto the paved bike path.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was our turn around spot.  Mile 9.  I was ready to go further, but John wanted to turn around and head for a snack 😀  You just can’t resist this face.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We road back to Glens Falls and hit up Coffee Planet at mile 12!  A 20 mile ride earned me an espresso brownie 😀

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Love longer ride days

New artwork on the walls.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I think this is sort of a cross between Picasso and Tim Burton.

More path riding homeward.  This is what we call the Sprinkles bridge because at the bottom of the hill is Sprinkles ice cream (open for the season).

Longest ride of the year so far.  Not quite ready to go to Saratoga yet, but I think a Lake George ride is coming soon – weather permitting.

Now, how did I do on those monthly goals?

1.  Purge closet – Fail. Again. Two months in a row.  We will just shelve this for now 😀

2. Get my bike outside.  Pretty obvious that this happened.  Almost 50 miles this month and Sunday still with some ride time, most likely.  Yay!

3. Moving in March.  I did pretty well with this.  Lots of walking and bike riding.

4. Planning meals.  We did this, but it is really hard, I have to say.  I imagine it gets easier the more you do it. It did get us to try more recipes, though!

5. Grain-Free days.  I did this pretty well.  I did keep a good check on calories, so my eating was actually quite good this month except for a bit of over snacking at the beginning.

Pretty decent March.  Now to find some goals for April!

Monday is an AIM post, so stay tuned 😀

First bike ride of the year!

I said I was going to get my bike on the road in March and I did it this weekend.  It was going to be sunny and mid 40s on Saturday, so I decided to just go for it.  The first ride is such a rigmarole with changing the tire to my road tire, pumping up the tires and adjusting everything.  Then hauling the bike down the stairs. How stuff gets out of whack from sitting on my bike trainer is beyond me, but it is so.

Mileage set to zero.

zero

Anyhoo – we decided to bike for some coffee.  I actually got John to go with. I think my excitement was catching or something 😀  Or possibly he was enchanted by my stylish attire:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was totally layered up for this ride.  I had on leggings under my bike pants. Then long underwear, a long sleeve technical shirt and 2 jackets. I could barely move!

me

Can you tell how excited I was to get out there?  John was waiting for me.  Usually it is the other way around.  It’s a little weird to bike with snow piles still around.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s not as snowy in other spots, it just looks like more because of the shoveling of the driveway.

The roads were dry, but the unpaved bike path is still impassible.  We did go on a bit of the paved part.  The canal is still frozen over.

canal

It actually turned out to be quite a nice ride.  I started to get a bit sweaty as we got towards the coffee shop.  The sun helped warm us up a lot. It actually ended up being close to 50 degrees!

At mile 6.5, we ended up at Coffee Planet.  They changed out the artwork recently and this artist encouraged participation with this large framed piece of paper and colored pencils to draw on.  This paper was blank last week.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We each had coffee and a snack.  No cupcakes, but I did have a big cookie!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was really an enjoyable day.  It felt so, so good to get out on the roads.  Riding on the trainer just can’t even come close.  Not to mention it can’t come close to doing real life hills and terrain.  We got home at 14 miles.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Not bad for the first ride of the year.  My thighs were a little tired, but other than that I was blissfully happy.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As I took this picture, John said “Ear to ear”  – and he was right!  I was so happy for the rest of the day.

Sunday brought another quick 6 mile ride, although it was breezier than Saturday.  I have 20 miles on the year, which is about 0.75% of my goal miles for the year  😯

Riding, cupcakes and kitties

What a gorgeous weekend!  So glad my bike isn’t inside on the trainer just yet 😀  It has been a while since we rode, though.  I really wanted to ride to breakfast on Sunday, even though we also wanted to ride later.   When I saw the temps were in the low 40s, I said I was riding to breakfast!  Funny how warm becomes relative the closer it gets to winter.

We did have to bundle up this morning.  Three layers here.

My eyes were watering a bit when we first started out and my nose was running like a sieve, but I was so happy to be biking again!  We were also happy to get to breakfast and get our hands around some warm mugs of coffee at Coffee Planet

It was such  a nice relaxing breakfast.  I love my Sunday morning relaxing.  We biked home and decided to go back out riding again after lunch.  12 miles done.

Meanwhile, remember Boo’s sibling stray that I called Lily?  Turns out Lily is Billy.  This cat was not like Boo and I hadn’t fed him or anything, although he did see me feeding Boo before.  He was not coming around at all, and then he showed up yesterday. I don’t know what changed, but I went out with food today and crouched down and he came right over, shaking like a leaf (I cried a little over that).  He wolfed down the food.  I also noted at this time he is an intact male.

He was outside as we were just getting ready to leave on the next ride of the day.  I made John wait while I got some food.

He’s in rough shape.  He has scabs and cuts on his face, so either fighting or possibly rolled by a car. After eating food, he let me pet him and rubbed on my legs.  This is 180 degree turnaround from not wanting anything to do with me.  It’s amazing what hunger and cold do.  Here he is a little content after eating.

You can see some of the wounds on his face.

Gotta love my patient husband, too, all ready to ride while I took care of the kitty.  We headed south on Route 4 down to Schuylerville to get some coffee.  There was quite a headwind on the way there – whew!  I didn’t complain, though.  Usually I whine about the wind, but I was so happy to be biking that I didn’t.  It had warmed up into the 50s, too, and was nice and sunny.  John wanted to stop and take off his jacket.

Happy!

Route 4 goes through rural Washington County and along the canal.  We stopped at our usual rest stop, which is 8 miles from home.

John stretching.

I guess that is stretching.  Or the cycling version of Stayin’ Alive.

At mile 14 (or 26 on the day), we arrived in Schuylerville.  This is another small town, but actually more bike friendly.  They have cute bike racks:

It’s also close to Saratoga, so there is some horse influence here as well.

Nice vacant building in the background there, too.  There are 2 coffee places and one bakery here. Both coffee shops were closed (Sunday), so we headed to the bakery cafe called Over the Moon.  I had some coffee and what was probably the last cupcake ride of the season (wahhhh!!!)

This was a carrot cake cupcake. John had a slice of chocolate cake with cream cheese icing.  All baked on the premises and delicious!

The best thing about riding someplace in a strong headwind?  Going home is super fast! Even though it is gradually uphill to home over the 14 miles, we were much, much faster on the way home.  It’s scary how fast the sun goes down now.  We stopped for a bit of a break.  My sit bones were a little tired from riding this much after not riding much lately.

All the leaves are gone now and things are turning brown.

Still pretty, though.

We rolled on home the rest of the way.  Definitely felt this ride.  Still got the hill legs though, just barely.  That last hill home, tough, but we both made it groaning all the way!

Total day stats (breakfast and afternoon rides)

Total distance: 38.7 miles

Average speed:  12.8 mph

Calories burned:  1144

Very good ride.  Each one we take I wonder if it is the last outdoor ride for the year.

A ride with a bit of everything!

Saturday had the looks to be a perfect outdoor day.  After a Friday of soaking rains all day, it was nice to see the sun.  The roads were pretty soggy, though, so we scrapped plans to bike to breakfast to let the roads dry out.

John owed my my football meal and I waited all week to get my breakfast at the Chocolate Mill!

Brioche french toast with blueberry compote.

The coat the bread with crushed cereal, which gives it a yummy crispy crunch!  And served with *real* maple syrup, thank you very much.

Temps were warming up and the roads were getting drier and we could’t wait to get on the bikes!  We decided to bike down to Saratoga for lunch.  We had to go earlier because of it getting dark earlier and also because we were having my folks over for dinner.

Ready for some fall pictures?

Kind of past peak, but nice none the less.  We stopped around mile 5 to save this guy:

Big snapping turtle.  He was crossing the road to a field, but that wasn’t such a good place for him, so we herded him towards the river and waved cars to slow down.  He started to safely head back down to the river bank.

And they aren’t kidding.  Turtles are sloowwww…

After a bit, John asked if I wanted to stop for a picture.  Sure!

Then he said, “I meant the view.”  Oh.

I decided to shed my jacket here since we were stopped and approaching the hill section for the day.    The skies were so blue and clear, right?

I laughed when I saw this picture.  John is not ducking out of the way, he was just looking at his front tire and I got some of him in the shot.

We stopped for a break around mile 15.

We went birdwatching here once with my sister a couple years ago and there were clouds of mosquitoes – so we didn’t stay long.  I would like to hike here again some time.

We arrived in Saratoga at mile 24 and went to the Beekman street art district for lunch. This place is called The Local and they serve lots of craft beer and locally sourced food.

We had BOGO coupon to eat here – score for bargains!!  I saw one of my favorite dishes on the menu – eggs benedict.  With local eggs?  Thank you!

We kept proclaiming how beautiful the day was for riding.  Should have known that Mother Nature had a surprise in store for us.  After lunch, we bike back into town for a bit of dessert.  We each got a pumpkin cupcake at Bettie’s.

One was a cinnamon coffee cake cupcake with pumpkin buttercream and the other was a pumpkin cupcake with pumpkin buttercream.  We split both of these.  While we were eating, the skies clouded up and it started to sprinkle.  Uh oh.  We went over to the library to go online and check weather.com.  The whole state was dry, but for one big green blob coming right our way with thunder!  Eeek!  We waited for a bit.

Nothing like being stuck 20+ miles from home, right?  We thought if we left, we could skirt around the rain as we headed north, so we  left after a bit.  We bike for 4 or 5 miles and got totally soaked and decided to pull over at a Dunkin Donuts to wait it out.  Too miserable.  I was sopping wet.

I had nothing waterproof with me at all, so I did my best with my hood under my helmet.  We could see blue sky just to the side, so we were hoping it would come soon.  Still pretty, though.

The rain finally tapered off and I wrung out my jacket.  Not waterproof.  There was absolutely no rain in the forecast for the day, so I don’t know what was up with that.  Now we were on the back end of the rain the rest of the way home, so the roads were wet, but at least it wasn’t raining on us any more.  It was cold riding soaking wet, I will say.

This is what passed over us moving on off to the north.

We had a fairly uneventful ride home until….

Right about mile 42:

Flat tire.   We were both afraid to say something out loud about getting a flat during this ride and then it happened 5 miles from home!

I took some foliage shots while John was changing his tire.

Finally made it home with an hour to spare before my parents were to come over for dinner.  Mad scramble to cook and shower!   I think my bike shoes won’t dry out for days.

Biking for jazz

What a gorgeous fall weekend!  Both days were nice, but Sunday was the nicest day.  Lake George was having the jazz festival all weekend, so we wanted to ride up on Sunday.  Now Sunday is also bagel day, which meant a double dip ride on the day.  We had a rewards card earnings of a free bagel, so we went to Panera Bread to start the day.  It was 41 degrees this morning!  That is close to the cutoff for riding temperature – and it is only mid September!

My loverly bagel:

Panera Bread is 16 miles round trip.  We went home for a bit and I packed up a lunch to bring to the jazz festival.  I wanted pastries, so that meant packing a lunch.  It had warmed up a bit into the 50s by the time we left.  We took the paths all the way there today.

We stopped for a quick snack.  This was around mile 11 or so (or 27 total miles).

So beautiful out today.  I think I kept saying that, too.  I had some dried pineapple.

Just starting to see some change in the sumacs now.  Color will be changing pretty soon.

I love biking – yay!

We arrived at the lake ready for some music!

The first group:

The sax player also brought out a bass flute, which is pretty cool.

And did I mention how beautiful it was?

We ate lunch while listening.

My mother came up for a while to listen as well, so we met her on the other side of the stage for the second group.  This one had a slide trumpet – which was interesting.

We had stopped at the Lake George Baking company for a few pastries to have in the afternoon.  John got lattes:

It’s pretty!

My mom and I each had one of these sfogliatelle, which is a shell shaped pastry filled with an orange ricotta cheese mixture.  I had to look up the name – they should make it easier for such a delicious pastry!

I might have also consumed a fantastic cannoli that I forgot to get a picture of.  I love long ride days

Lots of boats docked right on the lake behind the stage and listened to music. How cool would that be??

You just can’t make up these gorgeous colors.  We are lucky to have this jewel of a lake in the Adirondacks.

It was starting to get chilly and John and I were getting tired of sitting on the ground LOL! One thing about biking, you can’t bring your sitting chairs or even a blanket really.  Time to head on out.   I was a little stiff at first, but then loosened up and felt pretty awesome on the hills.  Still in good bike shape right now for the season.

I took a picture of John’s computer today 😀

What a great day!  Fall is my favorite time of year.  I really want another weekend day, though.  I am not ready for Monday yet!

Bikes, boats and cars

Saturday ride day.  It was a hot day.  The hot and sticky weather has made a return for the last bit of August.  We chose to go on an earlier ride and stop for lunch.  We decided to head up to Lake George.  This is what the first part of our ride looked like as we went road riding.  Very sunny.

Nice wide shoulder and in good condition. We stopped at Decision Point around 10.5 miles for a little snack.

Just before the next few miles of climbing to the lake.  I have to say I do not like this flavor of Larabar.  It tasted bitter to me for some reason.  I ate about 3/4 of it.

Onward to Lake George!  We got there and found out there was a boat and car show going on.  15 miles in.

We decided to stop for lunch at Adirondack Sandwich Works.

They have a lot of yummy choices there, and not just sandwiches.  John got a greek yogurt parfait that was really tasty.

(yes, the sticky bun coffeeshop was uber tempting… ). I had a grilled cheese plus some watermelon.

We are still doing no land meat week.  (ends Sunday).  This came with homemade kettle chips, which are good, but I didn’t feel like eating many of them.  After lunch, we walked around the boat and car showcase.

This is a green boat.  Electric and environmentally friendly!

Could you imagine sitting in these chairs on the lake sipping an icy cold beverage?  I could!

There were some cool old cars, too.

I liked this car.  Someone really did a lot to restore it.

Not even a speck of dirt on this grill.

Even the side wheel was super shiny.  I took a picture of its sparkliness and ended up with an accidental self portrait!

It was a beautiful day at the lake, even though it was getting really hot.

We decided to do a shorter ride because of the heat and just headed home.  We stayed on the paths mostly for the shade and didn’t stop at all for the 16 mile ride home.  I also decided to attack all the hills since it was a shorter ride.

I owned them all!  ROAR! I feel in really good bike shape right now.

We arrived home at 31 miles.

Ride stats:

Total miles:  31.6

Average speed: 12.8 mph

Top speed:  28.2 mph

I am doing really well towards the goal of 400 miles this month.  We rode another 22 mile Sunday morning and I have only 47 miles left to ride before Friday night.  Barring any horrible weather or other issue, I should make it easily.

And just in case you were wondering – we did have a treat in the evening.

Maple soft serve.  Yum!

52 miles for cupcakes

We had the most glorious weather this weekend! Cooler and dry.  It was a perfect weekend for biking 😀

We decided to head on down to Saratoga for our long ride on Saturday.  This was all road riding.  John wanted to have lunch down there, so we left around mid morning.  We took the newly paved bike lane on 197.  We had been kind of avoiding that because of the poor condition and now it is nicely done.  However, I kept hearing a squeaking noise coming from John’s bike.

Squeak. Squeak. Squeak.

It was rhythmic with his pedaling.  I decided that was going to drive me nuts hearing that for 50 miles, so we pulled over after about 4 miles for him to mess with the pedal.

The newly paved part is back there where the truck is.  This little meadow was full of butterflies. You can’t see them in this shot, but they were floating all over.

John lubed up his pedal arm and we were good to go.  No more noise!  Next stop was around mile 12. It looks like we are in the middle of nowhere, but we are actually right next to the main route 9 going south, just on a side road. Also newly paved.

We thought we saw a dog in the driveway of the house across the street, but turns out it was a goat!

He was just hanging around in the driveway.

We had snacks here.

It was bright and sunny today.  Not too hot, though, which was really nice.  Next stop was near the Wilton Mall.  This was 20 miles in.  I actually really hate biking near here because the traffic is icky.   We locked the bikes to a fence.

John wanted Hattie’s Chicken Shack.

knock, knock m***********

Now, if you have been reading, you know I have been poultried out this week.  So, I decided if I was going to eat at Hattie’s, I was going for what Hattie’s is known for.  What Hattie’s won a Bobby Flay Throwdown with.  The fried chicken.

I haven’t had fried chicken in years. Many years.  Let me tell you  – this is probably the best I have ever had.  I ended up not eating the bun and just eating the chicken out of it (it had coleslaw on it, southern style).  It was juicy, not greasy and so good!  Yummy!  We walked around a bit to let lunch settle.  We stopped at a couple stores –

And then here:

I pointed out various things that I wanted and John remarked that he could just do 1 store and be done shopping for me for Christmas.  Smart man I married, I tell you.

We decided to head to downtown Saratoga and John noted his front tire was flat.  Sigh…  While he was changing the tube, I filled up the old one with air to see where the leak was and it held air.  I am thinking what might have happened is that my bike was leaning on the pressure valve and let the air out  of his tire.  We need to test the tube later and see.  It would be nice to save $5 if it was still good.  Anyway, we got back on the road to our next stop on the tour of Living in the 10%, which was at The Bread Basket.  This was at mile 24.  I love how the front door looks like a hobbit house.

They had some cute cupcakes there:

However, we went with a more adult taste.  John’s carrot cake cupcake and my German chocolate.

They look smaller in the picture than they seemed in real life.  My cupcake with chocolate so dark light cannot escape its surface.

I forget the the cupcakes at Bread Basket are gut bombs.  Very, very rich.  There is a 4th dimension and it is cupcake vision.

John says “do I have to eat the whole thing?”

I was uber full at this point.  We walked across to Congress Park to let the cupcakes settle.

This is the Triton pool with “Spit” and “Spat”

Carved from Carrara marble. Kind of wanted to take a dip in that pool, too.

Time to head home.  We took what has become my favorite way home via West River Road.  This adds some miles onto the way back, but it’s all good, right?  I like this way because it goes through a lot of different scenery like shade, farms, open road, along the river.  There is a good mix of hills, too.  Luckily the first part leaving Saratoga is fairly flat.  I kept telling my cupcake to stay down!

Here we had just come out of a wooded area that was nice and shady.  John was adjusting his brakes.  This was around mile 32 or so?  Here is a cool barn:

We are around 40 miles here.  We took a breather, but didn’t need any snacks.  I was totally fueled on cupcakes 😀  You can see forever from here.

This is almost at the top of the biggest hill climbs for the way home, so it’s nice to get here and know that you are close to being done with the climbing.

Along the river, we spotted several birds.  One was a heron and the other was this egret.  This was around mile 46.

I was feeling pretty good and had a good second wind by this point.  We clipped along pretty well on this ride.  I was glad to be finished, though.

Ride stats:

Total miles:  52.2

Average speed 13.6 mph

Top speed:  32.5

Calories burned: 1607

This was probably the fastest average speed we have had for a long ride.  That’s 52 miles at that speed, so we were quite pleased about that.  Helps that there wasn’t really a strong wind today.

I love our long rides!
