Unexpected hills!

Another fabulously gorgeous weather weekend in the Adirondacks!  I was happy that John was home this weekend to be my biking buddy 😀    This was the Travers weekend at the track in Saratoga, so we wanted to avoid that traffic/people mess.  Lake George had a car/boat show, not to mention we were just at the lake on Thursday, so we decided on Schuylerville and Espressohuis.  John plotted out a route for us to go to make sure we got in 40 miles.  I don’t know why, but it doesn’t feel like a long enough ride unless we get to at least 40.  I know, please smack me.  John said he added an extra road to our route that didn’t seem too hilly to bump up the miles (cue dramatic music).

We stopped early in the ride about 6 miles in for a light lunch:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Egg bagel sammie!   Not many pictures for a bit.  We really just cooked along without stopping from here for another 15 miles.  Since I thought the rest of the ride would be mostly gentle hills for the ride home, I attacked all the hills on this part of the ride, trying to maintain a minimum speed on them for a challenge.

Then a stop for a stretch.  Another historical house and marker:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Around mile 25, we ended up in Schuylerville!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We sat on the deck to enjoy our treat:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My drink and peanut butter cuppie!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This cupcake is actually pretty small.  Very good, but I wish it was just a tiny bit bigger!  I do like coming here for our snack, too.  The owner is very nice.  After relaxing, we headed towards home and the new extended ride.

We turned down the new road. Sometimes I get anxious feeling when going a new route since I have no spatial relation to how long it is or the road conditions, terrain, etc.  This road was rolling hills and farmland.  We stopped our bikes and it was so, so quiet.  I have never been on a road so quiet.  There was no traffic noise at all – only the noise of insects and birds.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I see this ahead.  I was all, “Aw, hell no!”

hill

It doesn’t look as bad in this picture as it looked in real life.  I was really balking about going up and kind of wanted to turn around and go back home our normal way.  See, you can’t see past the trees there and I just knew that the hill kept going (and I was right).  I had almost hit a wall with the new road and being a bit tired, but decided to go ahead and tackle it.  We were around 35 miles on the day at this point. About 1/4 of the way up, I was thinking there was no way I was going to get to the top since I was already in a low gear.  How slow can you go and not fall over, right?  Pretty slow, it turns out LOL.  I finally put my head down and just ground it out.  Wobbled to the top, whew!  I told John that had I known about this hill, I would have had 2 cupcakes.

It did afford us with a nice view, though.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You can see forever.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was really discombobulated, though.  I could not quite wrap my head around where we were in relation to home, but it was pretty.  There were more rolling hills until we got dumped out just outside of the village about a mile and a half from home.  John said we didn’t end up quite where he thought, so we must have taken a wrong turn somewhere.  One last climb to home and I was complete toast LOL!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ride stats:

Total miles:  42.5

Average speed:  12.9 mph

Top speed:  29.7  (eek!)

Calories burned:  1374 – although with the hill work, this is probably low.

Perfect riding weather

Thanks for all your nice comments on our house!  I love to see before and afters of home improvement as well.  Of course, the front took quite a few years and trial and error to get to this point.  I need to see if I can find some pictures of my first year where I pretty much did all annuals and it was sparse looking LOL!

We had another gorgeous weekend.  For all the rain we have been getting this summer, Saturdays have been pretty good for riding.  It was just perfect, too.  Upper 70s, no wind, sunny.  Seriously – it’s perfect.  We chose to do a Saratoga ride for some frozen yogurt.  This time, we took our old way, which is down route 9N, a designated bike road.  We don’t ride this way very often anymore because we like the scenic back ways we take, but it was nice for a change.  We do avoid the interstate on-ramp and go by the Moreau State Park.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is around 11 miles or so into the ride and we stop for a stretch and I had a date:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yes, I was trying to give John a date head.  I am 5, you know.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is really the nicest part of the ride.  The rest mostly looks like this:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Although not as much traffic before this.  We are pretty close to Saratoga in this pic.  We arrived at Congress Park around mile 22.  We packed lunches to have:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I am surprised my banana held up so well being in my bag on the ride down.

There was a squirrel eating out of a garbage can near us, too.  Free lunch!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After eating, we strolled around town before getting our yogurt.  A new bookstore opened up called Northshire Books.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a very cool store. Hope they do well.  I sometimes feel guilty at all my Kindle reading, but I just can’t afford to buy a book every time I want to read.

Next to the new bookstore is a new Kilwin’s chocolate shop.  Amazing looking fudge here.  I almost got some, but didn’t.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I know, right?

One of the mineral springs:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

People will fill up all kind of water containers to take this stuff home.  Personally, I think it tastes like drinking salt water out of a cast iron bucket.  Yuck.

More Saratoga ballet shoes:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then it was time to hit up Plum Dandy.  They have several kinds of yogurt and lots of toppings to choose from.  This was 1 of 2 topping stations.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have to remember not to get much fresh fruit because that stuff is heavy.  You pay by the ounce.  My bowl.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Why yes, that is Cap’n Crunch on there!    Our bowls were expensive, too.  It was $13 for both of us, which is just too much for frozen yogurt.  In my opinion, of course.  I would rather have a coffee and cupcake from now on.

Riding home!  My legs felt great.  I remember when riding this route was really challenging for me a couple years ago with the hills.  Now we breezed up them.  Not that you don’t get out of breath from the effort, but we recover fast and can get up the hills much faster.  Feels pretty good to do that.

We stopped around mile 31 or so after the hill section for a rest.  John was trying to ignore me here:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

😀

More open road:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All in all, a nice day for a ride!

Home!  Note my nail art.  Again, 5 years old…

Then it was girl’s manicure tonight (said goodbye to my strawberries) – which I will post about this week with my nail stamping kit!

Blue Skies!

Saturday was just the best day for riding!  Upper 70s and sunny, not much humidity.  It was a bit breezy, though – but I could deal with that 😀  Too bad John was away for the weekend and missed this.

I wanted to get 40 miles in, but I decided I didn’t want to go all the way to Saratoga by myself and face the track crowds.  It is track season and this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Saratoga horse races and it is crowded, crowded!  So, I chose to do 2 separate rides.  The first one was to the farmer’s market.  Here is the historical marker of the day.

marker

I guess that you can figure out how far I was from home at this point 😉

The market had lots of pretty stuff, and an usually large amount of baked goods!

pie

Flowers.  I don’t need any of those.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Except I kind of wanted these.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I didn’t end up buying anything at the market, but it was a nice place to stop and look around.  I continued my big loop around and got a 15 mile segment in.

The other ride I wanted was going to EspressoHuis in Schuylerville.  I ate lunch at home and then decided to head down a little early since I knew there would be some sort of music playing as part of a summer series.  More sunscreen and I was on my way!

Look at the beautiful skies!

sky

I was singing Ella Fitzgerald most of the way down.

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see

I stopped about halfway there for a bit of nourishment.  Since there wasn’t much shade going this way, I wanted to make sure I didn’t feel the heat too much like a few weeks ago.
me
(I can see my arm in the reflection of my glasses!)
The bridge had reopened crossing the river, so I went over that.  I don’t like this bridge as it is really narrow and then the surface is open metal mesh – which feels very, very strange biking on it.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
At least I didn’t have to detour, though.
I arrived at EspressoHuis ready for a cuppicake!  This is a peanut butter cupcake.  It is a chocolate cupcake with some real peanut butter inside, topped with PB frosting.  YUM!
cuppicake
There was a real treat for music, too.  This was Hot Club Saratoga :
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Now, I loves me some Django Reinhardt. LOVE!!  (Go listen now, if you haven’t heard). I also love Hot Club of Detroit and have been hoping I could see them in concert.  So to find a band like that around here made me so happy!  Now I will be a stalker.
hot club
I happily sat on the deck and listened to the rest of their set with my snack.  What a wonderful surprise that was!
That got me grooving and bopping all the way home, too.  😀
More pretty water and sky:
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
It felt good riding today.  Only wish John had been home to share that ride.

And – after a breakfast ride on Sunday (meeting my mom for bagels!!!), my yearly mileage is here:
miles
I am now counting down 3 digits instead of 4.
My mileage this year is almost exactly where it was a year ago, so I am going to have to be very dedicated to get to 2500 as last year I hit 2100, but I wasn’t shooting for a specific goal – that just happened to be what I biked.

Roasting on the roads

Saturday means bike day!  It was a beautiful sunny day in the low 80s.  We were having trouble deciding where to go, though.  We wanted to go to Espresso Huis in Schuylerville, but that is only (relatively speaking) a 25 mile round trip ride.  What we decided to do was make a giant loop de loop to get there, with a lunch stop earlier in the ride.

I was excited:

me

On a side note – I need a haircut!  We slathered on the sunscreen and headed out.  This is the main route out of town that gets you to the northway.  It’s a busy road and a fast road, but it does have a wide shoulder designated as a bike lane.  There are some nice views, too.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I got excited because I thought I saw a goldfinch, but then I realized it was fake.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My biking companion!

john

We were twins on accident, too.  Our destination was Mr. Bill’s!  We haven’t been here yet this year.  We got here around mile 12 or so.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a 50s carhop – complete with music. This statue is very iconic:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had a grilled cheese sandwich.  That basket of fries was what came with John’s scallops – big enough to share!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After enjoying our lunch, we circled around to head south.  It was hot and sunny and not much shade.  We ended up going to our favorite River Road way.

We got through the hill portion and I was sooooo hot and sweaty!  At the top, I thought I was starting to bonk, so I had some pineapple.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was probably 25 miles on the day?  It turns out that I think I just got overheated and wasn’t really bonking.  I definitely wasn’t feeling that great. After a bit of a rest, we went another 5 miles to Espresso Huis!  Mile 31.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We really like this place.  Wish it was a little closer to home and we would come more often during the week.  We both had the same thing – iced chai latte and cuppicakes!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You know you want to see a close up of that, right? Chocolate coconut!

cuppie

There is a local baker that does the baked goods for them.

After a nice rest in air conditioned comfort and the refilling of bottles with ice water,  we headed home.  That heat episode really wiped me out, though.  I drafted off of John most of the way home (thanks, J!).

We had to take a detour because the bridge is out on our normal route home and we passed a cool dam on the canal.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then another cool thing – I could hear the Ospreys calling.  There is a nest along route 4 and they have babies now.  I stopped way back here to get a picture because she was disturbed by us, I think.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Of course, we did have to go by it anyway, but I didn’t want to freak her out by standing below the nest. You could see a little movement in the nest.  It would have been cool to see an aerial view.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I heard another one really close and we looked right up over our heads and saw the mate!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

He stared down at us for a bit.  I half expected him to dive down on us, but he didn’t.    Happy nesting, Ospreys!

And then finishing up the ride:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Total miles:  46.6

Average speed 13.4 mph

Top speed:  33.1 mph (big downhill!)

Calories burned: 1452

Note to self. Just because it isn’t humid doesn’t mean it isn’t hot.  We need to stick to morning and/or shadier rides at these temps.

Trail Riding!

Saturday was still somewhat warm in the 80s and humid, but way better than the rest of the week has been.  Since rain was in the forecast and it was hot, I decided to stick closer to home for my solo ride and hit most of the trails and designated bike routes around.  So join me, okay?  It’s a bit of a long post.

This path has a cinder surface.  Not my favorite to ride on, but it’s pretty.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This goes through Hudson Falls into Glens Falls.  Once it gets to  Glens Falls, it is paved.  Crossing over Quaker Road:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Good thing I took that crossbow class at BOW as apparently we have a date for the zombie apocalypse.

zombie

Here is part of the designated bike route.  Just a shoulder, really.  There are posted “Share the Road” signs.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is at the end of someone’s driveway.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Circling around to near SUNY Adirondack.  This used to be Adirondack Community College, but just recently joined the SUNY system.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There was a motorcycle safety class going on.  These people were just circling and circling:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At mile 15, I arrived back in Glens Falls and stopped at Coffee Planet for my mid ride treat!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have been dying to try a salted caramel cream puff, but normally a Glens Falls ride isn’t long enough to justify it LOL!  It was today.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Worthy of the miles, too!  With an iced latte.

After a rest, it was back on to a different trail.  The canal heritage trail.  Back on cinder with some company!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then near the dam:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It would have felt really good to jump in there, too!  I took this opportunity to put on more sunscreen.  Gotta keep that pasty white look year round 😀

I back tracked and hopped over the bridge to the Betar Bikeway.  This is only about 1 mile long or so, but very quiet and pretty.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was hoping to see some cool birds, but only saw a goose.  Usually this trail is good for at least a heron.

Back out to route 9 and Uh-Oh

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I did decide to go for it and ride to the right of the cones and the roads were actually okay.  The work was being done on the curb so the road surface was still good.  Not to mention it was nice that there was a barrier between me and the cars.

Back around to home and this is just road riding. Not designated for biking, but this is really the only way to get back home from here.  Here is the Hudson Falls Hydroelectric Project:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

See that nasty old building in the background?  That is part of the GE property and not used.  The same corporation that pooped its PCBs into the Hudson and contaminated it and then dragged their feet for years before finally agreeing to clean it up (dredging photos from last week).

Here is a photo of the old bridge people used to go over.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You can just see the current bridge to the left.  I am glad they haven’t torn this old bridge down because it is very cool looking.

One last stop at a farm stand to get some blueberries and it was home.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ride stats:

Total miles:  31.7

Average speed: 11.9 (city riding)

Top speed:  24.5

Calories burned:  1169 (cream puff worthy!)

Oh, almost forgot the obligatory selfie!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hope your weekend was just as good!

Cupcake Ride!

Finally!  A ride to Saratoga and a cuppicake 😀  The heat finally broke (for a day) and it was as good a day as any for a really long ride.

We decided to go early as storms were possible in the afternoon.  I packed a lunch and we set off!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My buddy 3>

It was cloudy and in the 70s, which felt so good after all this heat and humidity!

However, it did start to rain on us for part of the ride.  Weather.com – ‘expect dry conditions for the next 6 hours’ – my ass!  😡

We took river road for the first time this year.  I love this ride because there are hardly any cars and it is a very pretty ride.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Around mile 11 we stopped for a snack:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We booked into Saratoga at 14 miles per hour.  Woo Hoo!  It’s so much easier to ride when it isn’t hot.

We arrived at mile 23.5 and decided to eat lunch at Congress Park.  There was an art festival going on while we were there.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

John got a bagel, but I had decided to pack a lunch for myself:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wanted a cupcake for a treat, so that is why I packed my lunch.  After eating, we walked around the art show and then downtown.  City art this year is ballet slippers.  Large painted shoes all over town.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This one is all pink, sponsored by a store called the Pink Paddock:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then it was cupcake time!  We went to the Bread Basket.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It started to rain again at this time.  Ugh!  We sat out in the mist outside since there was nowhere to sit inside.  You can see our wet table. Our cupcakes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Mine was the big one!  Red velvet 😀  Yummers!  I call the cupcakes at the Bread Basket gut bombs, because they are.  I was very full after eating this.

We decided to head on home in case more rain was going to head our way.  Wouldn’t you know the sun came out?  We stopped so I could put on sunscreen.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This town is called Bacon Hill.  I love this person’s garden, too  – and I told them last year when we biked by it!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The river is still being dredged of the PCBs and the crews were working on Saturday:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s gong to be a looooong project.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Home!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Total miles:  51.7

Saddle time:  3 hours 40 minutes

Average speed:  14 mph

Top speed:  31.2!

Calories burn:  1641

We stopped at a farm stand a half mile from home because I spied some blueberries!  The woman asked if I wanted a bag.  I certainly wasn’t going to let a pint of blueberries roll around in my bike bag LOL!

Pixie hadn’t moved for our entire ride, sleeping in the dishwasher.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These berries were delicious, too!

Well-deserved post ride refuel of a protein shake:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There is no way I could eat an extra 1600 calories, so it was just a few mini meals for the evening to make a dent into the deficit.

Now the heat and humidity is making a return for the week.

Hope all of you had a great weekend as well!

Heat wave

I know it’s July and all that, but it sure feels like we skipped forward a month with this heat!  Not to mention the humidity.  None of the doors in our house open and close right because they are swollen from the humidity.

That puts a bit of a damper on riding because it is too much to be on the open roads in the sun, so we have to settle for closer to home.  We biked to the farmer’s market on Saturday for fun.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Roz – you should be here this week – this week’s word is kale!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I would have loved to buy a bunch of produce, but we were riding for a while after this and it would have all wilted (not to mention been heavy).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is some good peanut butter!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I sampled the s’mores butter.  Yum!

The bouquet lady was just about sold out.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We then headed out towards the lake, although were weren’t going all the way there.

New sign at our ‘decision point’:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There has been a problem between snowmobilers and the city with maintenance of the path because they ride over the bare path in winter and it gouges it up.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We decided to climb a few hills and then turn around.

It was lunch time and we decided to stop for froyo.  Turns out we weren’t the only ones having a lunch like this!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was bigger than I probably needed, but I ended up finishing it – probably because it was lunch LOL!

It was pretty hot and John was a little tired, so he headed home and I peeled off to do a few more miles. I wanted to get close to 30 on the day.  I went road riding:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Go me!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wound around some on the path as well.  The canal is pretty high right now with all the rain.  This lock usually isn’t gushing like this:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I went by what I call Covet House – because I do covet it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love this house and it’s big gardens.  If it went on the market, I would be first in line to buy it.  I like to make my riding route go by this house because I love to look at it.  I wish the picture was a little better, but I didn’t want to be a total creeper.

Home!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ride stats:

28.1 miles

Average speed 13.1 mph

Top speed 25.6 mph

Calories burned – 907.

Since it was a shorter ride, I really pushed the hills and felt great! I’ve got good legs right now.  With riding on Sunday, I cracked the 1000 mile mark for the season already!  If I do 100 miles a week, I can hit my 2500 mile goal before November.  That sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t. Just a few rides during the week and then 50 miles on the weekends, which is pretty standard.

Phoenix has made himself quite at home.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Pixie has been a real trooper through having the kitten around.  Phoenix and entourage will be going home on Sunday some time in the evening.  Pixie spent a lot of time up on the cabinets to get relief from his pestering.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

He is on the floor and you can just hear her thoughts.  Sigh… still here…

Summer riding!

Saturday = Long Ride Day!  A hot and sweaty ride, too.

John had a late poker night, so while he was sleeping, I went for a short ride  in the morning around the neighborhoods before it got hot – a warmup ride, so to speak 😀

Since it was so hot, we nixed Saratoga in favor of path riding that would be more shaded.  I lathered up with 70 SPF sunscreen.  There has to be some overkill with that, right?  How do you test 70 when there aren’t enough daylight hours to  test that?

Anyway, we headed up to Lake George.  Of course, we have to do street riding to get to the path.  And sometimes we just choose street riding.  Waiting at an intersection for the light to change.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was sweating in a hurry. Thank goodness there was a fair amount of cloud cover because it was very humid and hot.  The sun would have been roasting (like Sunday was, actually).

Hill climbing.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At the peak, this bridge overlooks the road going to the outlet malls.  Look at the line of cars waiting to turn at the light.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And it’s not even Christmas!

It was surprisingly uncrowded at the lake, but then I remembered it was graduation weekend for the high schools, so many people were at ceremonies and parties.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Did I mention how hot and humid it was?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

John wanted lunch in Lake George and we had a BOGO coupon for Taste of India.  Apparently Taste of India is now also a hookah bar.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

No hookah-smoking caterpillar, though. Who… are… you?

We started with some Naan bread.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I had some Shahi Paneer.  Paneer is an Indian cheese.  It is very mild in flavor like ricotta or cottage cheese, but has a texture similar to tofu.  It’s really good.  Mine was in a spicy yogurt/nut/tomato sauce.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Very good!  I like Little India in Saratoga better food wise and price wise.  But, when you eat in a tourist town, you have to expect that.

We walked to Shepard Park and saw a craft fair going on!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

That was fun!  We walked around and actually bought something. It was one of those cloth towels with a crocheted loop handle.  Our towels are always falling off the oven door, so we have been looking for more towels like this.  And at $3?  I’ll take it!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then it was riding for some ice cream!  We headed off to Martha’s:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was soooooo hot!!  Even my forearms were sweating.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

TMI, sorry. I did not get sunburned  – that is reflection off of my pink shirt.

I had pumpkin ice cream with wet walnuts.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was so good.  So good!  However, I was unable to finish it.  Sad, but true.

We headed on home, stopping by the marsh.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Lots of people fish from this bridge, although no one was on this day.

Remember last week I posted a picture of that building that was being torn down?  It’s all gone except the door:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

That is one cool door, too.  Wonder if they would notice if I went back and got it?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ride stats for the day:

Total miles:  41.3

Top speed:  28.7 mph

Average speed:  12.3 mph (lazy morning ride)

Saddle time:  3 hours 35 minutes

Calories burned:  1339

My legs are feeling really good now.  They should – I have almost 900 miles on the bike this season.  Doing good towards that goal of 2500 for the year.

Hope all of you had a great weekend as well!

Riding for sundaes!

HOT!!!  Us yankees are not used to this hot stuff.  It’s kind of humid, too.  Ick.  We have a window AC unit for the bedroom, but haven’t put in the one for downstairs yet.  We have another bit of cooler weather coming next week, so we didn’t feel like dragging the big unit out yet.

John is away, so I was left to my own biking devices on Saturday.  I wanted a longer ride and for ice cream, but I knew that it was going to be in the upper 80s and I didn’t want to over exert myself in that heat.  The solution?  2 rides!  I ate breakfast and then went out for a 10 mile ride.

I just love this time of year.  Not just because my birthday is coming up, but because everything is so fresh and green.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The canal is pretty high, too.  There is going to be a kayak race on it some time because I passed the finish line.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I won!!

After 10 miles, I came home and decided to go back out after lunch for a trip to Martha’s!  I have been wanting Martha’s, but the weather hasn’t been warm enough for me to want to bike to ice cream on the weekends.  Last weekend was 45 and rainy – today 85!  Crazy weather, I tell you.

I was all decked out in bright pink so cars would pay attention to me.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It seemed to work, too.  Cars stopped for me at all the crossings that I did today.  Pretty amazing!  Or, it could be what I suspect, which is that the universe really does revolve around me!

I stuck as much to the path as I could, but there is some yucky street riding to be done.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

With some not so lovely shoulder.

Time for Martha’s!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You can hear the screaming from Great Escape across the street.

I had the scholarship sundae which I have been craving!  It has chocolate and raspberry sauce with cookie crunch over whatever flavor softserve you want.  I had strawberry.

Nom, nom, nom!

Okay, I used a spoon.  Truth be told, I had a little bit of difficulty finishing this.  I totally lose my appetite when it is this hot.  I sent out a few texts telling everyone what I was enjoying (rubbing it in) and took my time finishing.

Clouds were starting to build up as I was leaving.

It threatened a little, but didn’t storm. Thank you.

Now for a few gratuitous garden pics since I didn’t post a what’s blooming on Friday because I got busy.

My lovely buttercup iris:

It’s has 5 buds on this stalk – yay!

Another allium.  This is one that I actually planted 2 years ago and it never came up.  Not sure why it did this year, but it was a treat to see!

The bed is all neat and tidy now.

Both beds, actually.  The side shade garden and the front.  All mulched and ready for the next blooming time.  It’s quiet time in the garden now until the roses pop out (next week!)

See you all Monday with an AIM post!

Memorial Day Ride

A big heartfelt thank you to all who have served in the military, those who gave their lives for our freedom and those who continue to risk their own lives!

I worked a little bit this morning, but it was finally nice enough weather to get out and ride!

We decided to go down to Saratoga and have lunch.  John planned the route (as he usually does).  We chose to bike down route 9 since they repaved the bike lane. YAY!

It was a little chilly in the morning, so I needed a jacket.  Look – it matched my nails!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Well, almost. We stopped around mile 8 so John could shed his jacket.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is a side road we take to avoid biking by the entrance to the northway.  Even though the bike lane goes through that, I feel uncomfortable with cars merging on and off the northway. Imagine that. 🙄

Back on route 9 and I needed to shed my jacket.  Everything is greening up nicely now!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

See this freshly paved bike lane?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s so nice.  This was all rutted and in horrible condition, so we stopped riding on it.  Nice to have another option for variety to get down to Saratoga.

We were booking on down.  We averaged 13.6 miles per hour down there.  Any time I can get over 13 mph on a hilly course is happy time.

At mile 24, we stopped for lunch at The Local.  We tried to use a Groupon, but the fine print said no holidays.  Lame!  It wasn’t crowded, so it didn’t make sense, but oh well.

Lots of beers on tap, but I didn’t partake.

I decided on a grilled cheese sandwich.

After lunch, we strolled around downtown and enjoyed the weather.

Working clock.  This was really the time.

I saw some roses blooming, which is really early!  These are  called Julia Child.

Then we hit up Spot Coffee to have a sweet before heading back.

I had a peanut butter and jelly bar with cafe au lait.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yummy, although I kind of was craving a cupcake LOL!

There was a bit of wind on the way home.  Okay, a little more than a bit.  It made for some tough going at times.  We didn’t stop too much.  About mile 35 or so and we hit the last of the longer climbing segments.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I kind of got a second wind after resting here.  Must have been the peanut butter and jelly bar kicking in 😀

Arrived home in good shape at mile 46!
