March Goal Wrap Up – with guitar!

Time for the wrap of the month!  This ended up being a really busy month for me, I have to say. Only 4 written goals, but I also managed to finish up our counters and helped install flooring at my folks’ house. No wonder I deserved that spa day 😉

Here were the March Goals:

1.  Continue with the Female Body Breakthrough program, really sticking with the 90/10 eating planWell, the workouts have been great – the eating not so much. Not sure why. I do really well for a week or 2 and then overeat. Sigh.

2.  Work on paring down my closet. After putting this on a monthly goal several times with no results, I actually got some done!  I purged out some things from the closet and my sock/undies drawer getting rid of everything with holes 😀

3.  Ride my bike – outsideNo, dammit! It was just too cold. I will bike in the 40s, but we couldn’t even manage to get temps to the 40s and if it did, it rained. Argh!

4. Do another guitar videoEnjoy below 😀  I almost didn’t do a video because when I sliced my finger doing the counters, I could not play my guitar for a week because it hurt so much! That was a long delay without practicing.  So, this is not the piece I was hoping to play, but good enough. I even memorized it for you.

Waltz in A by Matteo Carcassi

I always find it interesting watching myself play because I don’t notice how much I bobble my head around while I am playing. 😀

Now to figure out the goals for April.

Table, lights and Silent Night

Last weekend before the holiday!  I love holiday lights and we took my parents around to look in the neighborhoods.  We saw an article about a house with a massive display and headed over to see it.  They weren’t kidding!

lights

It was interactive with lights set to music and displays that you push buttons on to make things happen.  It went around the side of the house, too. Crazy!

I couldn’t get my camera to focus on the lights for whatever reason, but it came out kind of cool looking.

My momma at one end of a tunnel:

John on the other end:

It was pretty fun. Luckily it wasn’t super cold to be out exploring.

On other news – we finished the table!  Those of you on Facebook saw this already.  We made it just in time to host Christmas Eve dinner 😀

WP_20131221_002

It’s definitely not perfect.  The panels are a not flush to the rest of the table in some spots. Not totally sure why that is, but I think some is warpy wood and of course, the skill level of the assemblers.

This was the inspiration table from Restoration Hardware:

On sale for $1045 – $1185  – with delivery fee of $250.

Cost of our table?  $250 – and that was with buying the Kreg jig, too!  I thought our current chairs were going to look terrible, but they actually don’t look too bad.  We used this plan to build the table.

We should fit 8 around this pretty easily. Hopefully it won’t fall apart on Christmas Eve 😀

Here is a little Christmas festiveness for you.  I wanted to post a guitar video and finally got this one done.  10 takes later 😀  This is an arrangement of Silent Night.

Sorry that you can hear the furnace blowing in the background, but it was the best take LOL! Enjoy!

First cupcake ride!

Well, glad to be back.  There was a domain registration snafu over the weekend.  Of course it would be over the weekend and tech support was nonexistent.  So, my apologies for anyone thinking I just disappeared – and thanks for people emailing and on FB checking in to let me know.  Nice to know people care  😛  Community hugs all around!

Anyhoo – we had the most fantastic weather weekend around here.  Just fabulous! So, that meant some good riding happened.

Me and new helmet ready to ride!  I finally got my straps adjusted right after the first part of the ride – you can see them sticking out funny in this picture.

We headed down to Schuylerville as I wanted to take John to the place I took my sister a few weeks ago.

It was in the  low 60s, so I had on a couple layers, but the sun was shining and it was so nice to be out!  We stopped at 8 miles in on route 4 at our usual rest stop along the canal.

I told John to wave hi to the nice people!

I just loved the sky.  Spring is finally here!

Now it just needs to get a little greener.

We zipped on down to Schuylerville.  We were averaging 14 miles an hour, which is good for our hybrids!  We arrived at EspressoHuis at around mile 13.

I love that they showcase local artists and have a local baker do their baked goods.  This horse is pretty cool.

I had a raspberry almond cupcake and a latte:

We sat out on the huge deck out back and enjoyed the weather.

Isn’t this a cool place to have a cuppa?

We had a fairly uneventful ride home, but did stop to take some pictures of burros!  One of the local farms now has them.

They are for sale, too.  Maybe I will ask for one for my birthday

We decided to give one of our tough hills a try to see how the early season legs are.  The McIntyre Hill.  It’s at the very end of the ride when we go this way.  When I first started climbing, I did not think I was going to make it.  I was in almost the lowest possible gear and I was talking to myself pretty hard to get to the top (expletives included).   We both made it, barely!  But yay!!!  One of those times when I wish I had a heart rate monitor, although it probably would have exploded.

Ride stats:

Total miles:  27.25

Average speed:  13.5 mph

Top speed:  24.4 mph

Calories burned:  840

Quite pleased with the ride overall.  In fact, we got in over 50 miles of riding this weekend.  Woot!  Next week will be Lake George and those hills.

And to end, as promised, here is one of my guitar videos I made this month.  You can watch it on youtube here or below.  It’s about 3 minutes.

It took a lot of takes to get one I was fairly happy with LOL!

Happy Pi Day!

It’s Pi Day!  John’s favorite day.  His very favorite dessert is pie and he is a math whiz.

No pie for breakfast, just some pumpkin oat bran.

oat bran

The weather has turned cold again. Sigh.

Busy day with work today, which is good.  It’s been a bit spotty lately and nice to have the last day of the pay period full of work to do.

Good news on the salmon front.  For lunch, John made the salmon patties from the canned vertebrae salmon that I attempted last week.  He picked out all the bones and made up the patties.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Verdict? I would eat them again! Surprisingly.  They were pretty good and if I don’t think about the can from last week, I am okay.  John has to fix them from now on or we have to buy the pouch salmon without bones.

My guitar was *finally* repaired. That took forever.  Since John was going to be out tonight with the car, I wanted to pick it up this afternoon. Of course, since it was pi day – we had to make a stop for some coffee:

latte

And pie!  John got a peanut butter chocolate pie.    He let me swipe a couple bites and it was quite tasty.

pie

Yay Pi Day!

Then it was picking up my guitar. Pretty much as good as new. There is a little chip in the finish at the bridge that pulled up when the bridge flew off, but other than that – it looks good.  They did put 6 new strings on it, so it will be a bit annoying with tuning for the next week or so until they get stretched appropriately.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I am sooooooo happy to have this back!

happy lori

Would that be a happy face? I believe so.  It was all I could do to get back to work.  I could not finish fast enough.

Leftovers for dinner.  The last of the cheesy chicken chili.  I will miss it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is how I ate it the 3 times I have had it this week – always with sauteed broccoli.  Creature of habit.

Did some low impact aerobics after dinner and now I have set out my snack for later.  I am feeling almost…. organized??

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Now for what I have been waiting to do all afternoon – go play my guitar!

Guitar hero

Just a mishmash day today.  I like unstructured days, don’t you?  Of course, my day itself is structured, but I am going to just post stuff today.  This morning’s ride to breakfast was nice.  The city planted flowers and they are nicely blooming.

This street was totally redone this year.

Golden helmet!

I feel like Thor or something.  Does Thor eat bagels, I wonder?

That is John’s coffeecake in the background.  The coffee shop people know what we get all the time.  Hello from Rutsville.

So my little attic find project came out quite nice.  Last night, I used a drill to put some small holes in the bottom of each one for drainage.  Then I had to use a dremel to cut a wire bar that was across the fan one.  I am the queen of power tools!

Here they are.

I like this one better:

The vine will twine up the handles on this one over time (I hope).

I cleaned up the petunia a bit and it looks much happier.  Of course, both of the bigger plants were root bound and I am sure they are stretching their toes today.

I am not totally sure where they are going to go.  Guess I should have thought of that beforehand LOL!

Regarding Pixie and the birds.  I do have the bird feeders outside the big window that has a nice ledge for Pixie to sit on.  We call it Pixie TV.  Some birds drive her bonkers and others she could care less about.  There really seems to be no rhyme or reason to which birds, either. Not sure why that is, but she is a cat and maybe it has something to do with having a brain the size of a pea.  A lovable pea, but not very bright.

Now another cat shows up and she has a fit!  Sometimes she will puff up, which is hilarious because she is already pretty fluffy.

And, last but not least, my guitar video.  I promised one up this month.  This was not the song I had hoped to record.  Monday night I was really tired when I tried to record myself (big mistake) and kept making errors, so I switched pieces. This is really my warm up piece.  I do have it memorized, though.

Country Dance by Carulli (link for those that don’t see the embed)

I have to say it is funny to watch myself and see all the little things I do that I don’t realize when playing.

Thanks for indulging and listening to my progression 😀

Guitar preview

Are you ready?

After my promise at the beginning of the year:

– I am going to work on my classical guitar this year. I really hope to practice 3 times a week and keep at it.  I tend to go in cycles with this.  In fact, to do this, I will commit to putting a video of myself on the blog playing something at the end of the year.      It may be Mary Had a Little Lamb, but I will do it… gulp…

I did practice – and about 6 days a week, too.  If you missed my post on what I learned from my guitar, check it out here.

Recording these videos has been an adventure.  First was finding a good spot to do it in with the best acoustics in the house I could find.  Hence my upstairs hallway shot LOL!

I also made mistakes a lot from some nerves and just general goofs.  (I should do an outtake video, although this is a family blog.). I had to decide which of the mistakes I made annoyed me the least to decide which take to use.

I will post a few videos over the next couple weeks for your enjoyment. I thought I would share a little short piece to start.  This is a Carulli prelude in G major

Weekend wrap up and new axe!

Weekend fly by!  I haven’t checked in for a few days here.  Goodness.  Friday was quite busy.  I went to lunch with the garden club and that was nice.  A nice group of women.  Of course, they don’t meet again until April!  It was nice to meet everyone in a more casual environment rather than at a meeting.  We were at the Log Jam, which I am eager to go back to.

I didn’t take pictures inside so as not to have the women think I am really weird – at least yet, anyway.

On Saturday, John took me out to breakfast for my winning football meal.

Winner, winner!!  This was the Thyme Cafe, a new place that opened up.  It’s feeling all festive around here:

I had a gingerbread waffle with *real* maple syrup.  I pooh-pooh the Log Cabin, and since John was paying, I upgraded my syrup!  😈

My mother and I then went on a Country Christmas spree.  This is an annual event where many artisans open their homes up to sell their goods and you drive from place to place using a very lame map.

It’s fun and everyone has refreshments. I had my share of cookies on Saturday!

We saw a loom shop:

Plus a farm where I got some yummy smoked cheese and a maple scone.  Here were some babies resting.

That one cow was licking the other one’s ear.  So cute (even if stinky).

Everything was all holiday decorated:

I also have been practicing up a storm this weekend.  With the soap order I got, I now have a new axe to grind!  I got a great deal on this guitar, too. With the Black Friday deal and sale price, I paid $189.  Saved about $400, which put it into my budget.   I tell you, this year has been great for me and finding deals.

Axe is  a guitar in musician speak, BTW    This is a Manuel Rodriguez guitar and has a cedar top with a beautiful inlay rosette:

The back and sides are bubinga wood and gorgeous:

My original guitar was a cheap student model and let me tell you, the difference is stunning between the 2.  I didn’t realize how much a quality guitar would make a difference in my playing.  The sound is gorgeous and it is so easy to play. I am in loooooooooove with the new guitar and I can’t stop playing it.  In fact, my fingers are sore LOL!

Happy lady:

I actually kissed the guitar, too.  I know John really is concerned about my sanity now.

I am wearing my Broncos jersey, too, since it is Sunday.  I am not on the Tebow band wagon at all, but I certainly am happy my Broncos have been winning!

Man, life is so good right now.
