Rainy Sundae

Ah to be back in my quiet lifestyle again!  After a pell mell week, it was good to go for a relaxing ride on Saturday.  I made the mistake of trusting weather.com that it would not rain, but other than that it was a good day.

Come along with me for some peaceful photos!

I missed my bike!  One thing about Vegas – not bike friendly.  It gave me the willies thinking about trying to get to and from the Strip to get to work there.  Not that we saw anyone on bikes doing that, but they should think about making the city itself more bike friendly.

me

It was a little chilly in the 60s for the first part of the ride, but the sun was out and it was nice to be on open roads with very little traffic.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I had decided I wanted Martha’s ice cream today, so I made a large loop around towards Lake George.  I didn’t actually want to go all the way to the lake because there was a big car show going on and I had no desire to be around a lot of people after being in Vegas.

I had to shed my jacket after a while.  This part of the path goes through Glens Falls.  A lot of stop and go, so it kills your average speed, but it’s pretty.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Lots of fall blooming flowers.  Goldenrod and Joe Pye Weed:

Rest spot!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I sat on a rock next to my bike and caught movement out of the corner of my eye.  Little tiny toad!  He was maybe an inch long and very cute.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I will make him look big and fierce, though.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After some rest, I headed to Martha’s.  I had asked my mom if she wanted to meet me there.  I gave an approximate time with a half hour window because you never know when riding what can happen.  We ended up getting there within 5 minutes of each other!  Perfect timing.

I had a scholarship sundae:

sundae

That’s hot fudge, raspberry sauce and cookie crumbs.  Yum!

Mama Radiance:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My dad wanted to burn leaves instead of come for ice cream, can you believe that?  Doesn’t know what he is missing.  Anyway, we chatted for a long time since I had to catch her up on all we did in Vegas and the skies started to cloud up.  I figured it was best to head home.  Sure enough, a mile or so in going home and it started to sprinkle.  I almost thought about pulling over and waiting, but then realized it probably was a rain that wasn’t going to stop.  So, I pulled over and put my jacket on.

Frowny!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I then saw this and had to pull over, rain or not.  This is newly painted because I know this wasn’t here a few weeks ago.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was mostly light drizzle at this point, so I changed my route home to go on the path and get under some tree cover to keep dry.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We have been avoiding this part of the path all summer because it dumps you out into construction, but it was worth keeping drier.

Done!  I cut the ride a bit short because of the weather, but still a good ride.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ride stats:

Total miles:  38.5

Ride time:  3 hours 5 minutes

Average speed:  12.3 mph

Top speed:  22.1 mph

Calories burned:  1317 – good enough for a big sundae!

And irony? I was so glad to get out of the cold and drizzle and hop into the shower

Perfect riding weather

Thanks for all your nice comments on our house!  I love to see before and afters of home improvement as well.  Of course, the front took quite a few years and trial and error to get to this point.  I need to see if I can find some pictures of my first year where I pretty much did all annuals and it was sparse looking LOL!

We had another gorgeous weekend.  For all the rain we have been getting this summer, Saturdays have been pretty good for riding.  It was just perfect, too.  Upper 70s, no wind, sunny.  Seriously – it’s perfect.  We chose to do a Saratoga ride for some frozen yogurt.  This time, we took our old way, which is down route 9N, a designated bike road.  We don’t ride this way very often anymore because we like the scenic back ways we take, but it was nice for a change.  We do avoid the interstate on-ramp and go by the Moreau State Park.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is around 11 miles or so into the ride and we stop for a stretch and I had a date:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yes, I was trying to give John a date head.  I am 5, you know.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is really the nicest part of the ride.  The rest mostly looks like this:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Although not as much traffic before this.  We are pretty close to Saratoga in this pic.  We arrived at Congress Park around mile 22.  We packed lunches to have:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I am surprised my banana held up so well being in my bag on the ride down.

There was a squirrel eating out of a garbage can near us, too.  Free lunch!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After eating, we strolled around town before getting our yogurt.  A new bookstore opened up called Northshire Books.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a very cool store. Hope they do well.  I sometimes feel guilty at all my Kindle reading, but I just can’t afford to buy a book every time I want to read.

Next to the new bookstore is a new Kilwin’s chocolate shop.  Amazing looking fudge here.  I almost got some, but didn’t.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I know, right?

One of the mineral springs:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

People will fill up all kind of water containers to take this stuff home.  Personally, I think it tastes like drinking salt water out of a cast iron bucket.  Yuck.

More Saratoga ballet shoes:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then it was time to hit up Plum Dandy.  They have several kinds of yogurt and lots of toppings to choose from.  This was 1 of 2 topping stations.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have to remember not to get much fresh fruit because that stuff is heavy.  You pay by the ounce.  My bowl.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Why yes, that is Cap’n Crunch on there!    Our bowls were expensive, too.  It was $13 for both of us, which is just too much for frozen yogurt.  In my opinion, of course.  I would rather have a coffee and cupcake from now on.

Riding home!  My legs felt great.  I remember when riding this route was really challenging for me a couple years ago with the hills.  Now we breezed up them.  Not that you don’t get out of breath from the effort, but we recover fast and can get up the hills much faster.  Feels pretty good to do that.

We stopped around mile 31 or so after the hill section for a rest.  John was trying to ignore me here:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

😀

More open road:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All in all, a nice day for a ride!

Home!  Note my nail art.  Again, 5 years old…

Then it was girl’s manicure tonight (said goodbye to my strawberries) – which I will post about this week with my nail stamping kit!

Blue Skies!

Saturday was just the best day for riding!  Upper 70s and sunny, not much humidity.  It was a bit breezy, though – but I could deal with that 😀  Too bad John was away for the weekend and missed this.

I wanted to get 40 miles in, but I decided I didn’t want to go all the way to Saratoga by myself and face the track crowds.  It is track season and this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Saratoga horse races and it is crowded, crowded!  So, I chose to do 2 separate rides.  The first one was to the farmer’s market.  Here is the historical marker of the day.

marker

I guess that you can figure out how far I was from home at this point 😉

The market had lots of pretty stuff, and an usually large amount of baked goods!

pie

Flowers.  I don’t need any of those.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Except I kind of wanted these.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I didn’t end up buying anything at the market, but it was a nice place to stop and look around.  I continued my big loop around and got a 15 mile segment in.

The other ride I wanted was going to EspressoHuis in Schuylerville.  I ate lunch at home and then decided to head down a little early since I knew there would be some sort of music playing as part of a summer series.  More sunscreen and I was on my way!

Look at the beautiful skies!

sky

I was singing Ella Fitzgerald most of the way down.

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see

I stopped about halfway there for a bit of nourishment.  Since there wasn’t much shade going this way, I wanted to make sure I didn’t feel the heat too much like a few weeks ago.
me
(I can see my arm in the reflection of my glasses!)
The bridge had reopened crossing the river, so I went over that.  I don’t like this bridge as it is really narrow and then the surface is open metal mesh – which feels very, very strange biking on it.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
At least I didn’t have to detour, though.
I arrived at EspressoHuis ready for a cuppicake!  This is a peanut butter cupcake.  It is a chocolate cupcake with some real peanut butter inside, topped with PB frosting.  YUM!
cuppicake
There was a real treat for music, too.  This was Hot Club Saratoga :
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Now, I loves me some Django Reinhardt. LOVE!!  (Go listen now, if you haven’t heard). I also love Hot Club of Detroit and have been hoping I could see them in concert.  So to find a band like that around here made me so happy!  Now I will be a stalker.
hot club
I happily sat on the deck and listened to the rest of their set with my snack.  What a wonderful surprise that was!
That got me grooving and bopping all the way home, too.  😀
More pretty water and sky:
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
It felt good riding today.  Only wish John had been home to share that ride.

And – after a breakfast ride on Sunday (meeting my mom for bagels!!!), my yearly mileage is here:
miles
I am now counting down 3 digits instead of 4.
My mileage this year is almost exactly where it was a year ago, so I am going to have to be very dedicated to get to 2500 as last year I hit 2100, but I wasn’t shooting for a specific goal – that just happened to be what I biked.

Trail Riding!

Saturday was still somewhat warm in the 80s and humid, but way better than the rest of the week has been.  Since rain was in the forecast and it was hot, I decided to stick closer to home for my solo ride and hit most of the trails and designated bike routes around.  So join me, okay?  It’s a bit of a long post.

This path has a cinder surface.  Not my favorite to ride on, but it’s pretty.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This goes through Hudson Falls into Glens Falls.  Once it gets to  Glens Falls, it is paved.  Crossing over Quaker Road:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Good thing I took that crossbow class at BOW as apparently we have a date for the zombie apocalypse.

Here is part of the designated bike route.  Just a shoulder, really.  There are posted “Share the Road” signs.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is at the end of someone’s driveway.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Circling around to near SUNY Adirondack.  This used to be Adirondack Community College, but just recently joined the SUNY system.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There was a motorcycle safety class going on.  These people were just circling and circling:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At mile 15, I arrived back in Glens Falls and stopped at Coffee Planet for my mid ride treat!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have been dying to try a salted caramel cream puff, but normally a Glens Falls ride isn’t long enough to justify it LOL!  It was today.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Worthy of the miles, too!  With an iced latte.

After a rest, it was back on to a different trail.  The canal heritage trail.  Back on cinder with some company!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then near the dam:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It would have felt really good to jump in there, too!  I took this opportunity to put on more sunscreen.  Gotta keep that pasty white look year round 😀

I back tracked and hopped over the bridge to the Betar Bikeway.  This is only about 1 mile long or so, but very quiet and pretty.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was hoping to see some cool birds, but only saw a goose.  Usually this trail is good for at least a heron.

Back out to route 9 and Uh-Oh

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I did decide to go for it and ride to the right of the cones and the roads were actually okay.  The work was being done on the curb so the road surface was still good.  Not to mention it was nice that there was a barrier between me and the cars.

Back around to home and this is just road riding. Not designated for biking, but this is really the only way to get back home from here.  Here is the Hudson Falls Hydroelectric Project:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

See that nasty old building in the background?  That is part of the GE property and not used.  The same corporation that pooped its PCBs into the Hudson and contaminated it and then dragged their feet for years before finally agreeing to clean it up (dredging photos from last week).

Here is a photo of the old bridge people used to go over.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You can just see the current bridge to the left.  I am glad they haven’t torn this old bridge down because it is very cool looking.

One last stop at a farm stand to get some blueberries and it was home.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ride stats:

Total miles:  31.7

Average speed: 11.9 (city riding)

Top speed:  24.5

Calories burned:  1169 (cream puff worthy!)

Oh, almost forgot the obligatory selfie!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hope your weekend was just as good!

Cupcake Ride!

Finally!  A ride to Saratoga and a cuppicake 😀  The heat finally broke (for a day) and it was as good a day as any for a really long ride.

We decided to go early as storms were possible in the afternoon.  I packed a lunch and we set off!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My buddy 3>

It was cloudy and in the 70s, which felt so good after all this heat and humidity!

However, it did start to rain on us for part of the ride.  Weather.com – ‘expect dry conditions for the next 6 hours’ – my ass!  😡

We took river road for the first time this year.  I love this ride because there are hardly any cars and it is a very pretty ride.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Around mile 11 we stopped for a snack:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We booked into Saratoga at 14 miles per hour.  Woo Hoo!  It’s so much easier to ride when it isn’t hot.

We arrived at mile 23.5 and decided to eat lunch at Congress Park.  There was an art festival going on while we were there.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

John got a bagel, but I had decided to pack a lunch for myself:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wanted a cupcake for a treat, so that is why I packed my lunch.  After eating, we walked around the art show and then downtown.  City art this year is ballet slippers.  Large painted shoes all over town.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This one is all pink, sponsored by a store called the Pink Paddock:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then it was cupcake time!  We went to the Bread Basket.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It started to rain again at this time.  Ugh!  We sat out in the mist outside since there was nowhere to sit inside.  You can see our wet table. Our cupcakes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Mine was the big one!  Red velvet 😀  Yummers!  I call the cupcakes at the Bread Basket gut bombs, because they are.  I was very full after eating this.

We decided to head on home in case more rain was going to head our way.  Wouldn’t you know the sun came out?  We stopped so I could put on sunscreen.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This town is called Bacon Hill.  I love this person’s garden, too  – and I told them last year when we biked by it!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The river is still being dredged of the PCBs and the crews were working on Saturday:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s gong to be a looooong project.

We stopped at a farm stand a half mile from home because I spied some blueberries!  The woman asked if I wanted a bag.  I certainly wasn’t going to let a pint of blueberries roll around in my bike bag LOL!

Pixie hadn’t moved for our entire ride, sleeping in the dishwasher.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These berries were delicious, too!

Well-deserved post ride refuel of a protein shake:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There is no way I could eat an extra 1600 calories, so it was just a few mini meals for the evening to make a dent into the deficit.

Now the heat and humidity is making a return for the week.

Hope all of you had a great weekend as well!

Heat wave

I know it’s July and all that, but it sure feels like we skipped forward a month with this heat!  Not to mention the humidity.  None of the doors in our house open and close right because they are swollen from the humidity.

That puts a bit of a damper on riding because it is too much to be on the open roads in the sun, so we have to settle for closer to home.  We biked to the farmer’s market on Saturday for fun.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Roz – you should be here this week – this week’s word is kale!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I would have loved to buy a bunch of produce, but we were riding for a while after this and it would have all wilted (not to mention been heavy).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is some good peanut butter!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I sampled the s’mores butter.  Yum!

The bouquet lady was just about sold out.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We then headed out towards the lake, although were weren’t going all the way there.

New sign at our ‘decision point’:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There has been a problem between snowmobilers and the city with maintenance of the path because they ride over the bare path in winter and it gouges it up.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We decided to climb a few hills and then turn around.

It was lunch time and we decided to stop for froyo.  Turns out we weren’t the only ones having a lunch like this!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was bigger than I probably needed, but I ended up finishing it – probably because it was lunch LOL!

It was pretty hot and John was a little tired, so he headed home and I peeled off to do a few more miles. I wanted to get close to 30 on the day.  I went road riding:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Go me!!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I wound around some on the path as well.  The canal is pretty high right now with all the rain.  This lock usually isn’t gushing like this:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then I went by what I call Covet House – because I do covet it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love this house and it’s big gardens.  If it went on the market, I would be first in line to buy it.  I like to make my riding route go by this house because I love to look at it.  I wish the picture was a little better, but I didn’t want to be a total creeper.

Home!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ride stats:

28.1 miles

Average speed 13.1 mph

Top speed 25.6 mph

Calories burned – 907.

Since it was a shorter ride, I really pushed the hills and felt great! I’ve got good legs right now.  With riding on Sunday, I cracked the 1000 mile mark for the season already!  If I do 100 miles a week, I can hit my 2500 mile goal before November.  That sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t. Just a few rides during the week and then 50 miles on the weekends, which is pretty standard.

Phoenix has made himself quite at home.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Pixie has been a real trooper through having the kitten around.  Phoenix and entourage will be going home on Sunday some time in the evening.  Pixie spent a lot of time up on the cabinets to get relief from his pestering.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

He is on the floor and you can just hear her thoughts.  Sigh… still here…

Memorial Day Ride

A big heartfelt thank you to all who have served in the military, those who gave their lives for our freedom and those who continue to risk their own lives!

I worked a little bit this morning, but it was finally nice enough weather to get out and ride!

We decided to go down to Saratoga and have lunch.  John planned the route (as he usually does).  We chose to bike down route 9 since they repaved the bike lane. YAY!

It was a little chilly in the morning, so I needed a jacket.  Look – it matched my nails!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Well, almost. We stopped around mile 8 so John could shed his jacket.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is a side road we take to avoid biking by the entrance to the northway.  Even though the bike lane goes through that, I feel uncomfortable with cars merging on and off the northway. Imagine that. 🙄

Back on route 9 and I needed to shed my jacket.  Everything is greening up nicely now!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

See this freshly paved bike lane?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s so nice.  This was all rutted and in horrible condition, so we stopped riding on it.  Nice to have another option for variety to get down to Saratoga.

We were booking on down.  We averaged 13.6 miles per hour down there.  Any time I can get over 13 mph on a hilly course is happy time.

At mile 24, we stopped for lunch at The Local.  We tried to use a Groupon, but the fine print said no holidays.  Lame!  It wasn’t crowded, so it didn’t make sense, but oh well.

Lots of beers on tap, but I didn’t partake.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I decided on a grilled cheese sandwich.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After lunch, we strolled around downtown and enjoyed the weather.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Working clock.  This was really the time.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This must be Beyonce’s cousin:

metal pig

oink, oink m********

I saw some roses blooming, which is really early!  These are  called Julia Child.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then we hit up Spot Coffee to have a sweet before heading back.

I had a peanut butter and jelly bar with cafe au lait.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Yummy, although I kind of was craving a cupcake LOL!

There was a bit of wind on the way home.  Okay, a little more than a bit.  It made for some tough going at times.  We didn’t stop too much.  About mile 35 or so and we hit the last of the longer climbing segments.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I kind of got a second wind after resting here.  Must have been the peanut butter and jelly bar kicking in 😀

Arrived home in good shape at mile 46!

Good ride indeed!

Solo lake ride!

My biking partner is out of town this weekend and I wanted to go to the lake, so it was solo riding for me!

When I told John that I was going, he said, “Please be careful.”   Now, anyone who knows me IRL (and even on the blog) knows that I am about safety first.  I might actually be a little too cautious sometimes.  I trust no one when I am on my bike.  Not even the squirrels darting about.  So, I laughed and said back to John, “I am always careful.”   His response? “I know, but it makes me feel better to say it to you.”  <3

I ate an early lunch and checked over the bike, filled the tires, checked the chain and brakes and headed out.  It was wonderfully sunny and warm – in the low 70s!  I did have a lightweight jacket on at first because I wasn’t sure if it would be cooler at the lake (it usually is), plus the wooded part of the path can be cooler as well.  Except I forgot there were barely any leaves on the trees and the wooded parts were pretty sunny!  The first 6 miles or so were on city roads until I got into Glens Falls and got onto the bikeway.

I ditched my jacket at this crossover of a road from the path.  I always feel like there should be donut and candy shops on this road, but there aren’t.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Starting to sweat!

me

A couple miles later, I realized I had better put on sunscreen.  I probably was blinding anybody I went past since my pasty white arms have hardly seen the light of day since last fall.  So I pulled over to put that on.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m a ghost in this.  I didn’t see my own reflection until I downloaded this 😀

This is the marsh.  It’s still pretty brown.

marsh

I was curious as to how my hill legs would be for the first lake ride of the year.  I  made it up all the climbs pretty easily and I am totally thrilled at how good my legs are already.  I don’t know why that is or how to duplicate it next off season, but I’ll take it now!  This is the wooded part of the path.  No leaves!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was cut through rock in some parts.  Not sure why people feel the need for graffiti, but they do.  There are a lot of flags painted on this rock for whatever reason.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was happy to reach the lake at mile 16.  It was particularly blue today.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All of the shops on Beach St. are closed right now.  They only open up for tourist season.  Not to mention the road is being repaved right now.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The main street has a fair number of open businesses.  Those ones run by locals and not people from downstate who only come up for summer.  There were not a lot of people around, but some.  The stores were having sidewalk sales and 2 new stores opened that sell only purses – the same store with one location on each side of the street.  Really? I own 1 purse (and I hardly ever use it), so that business won’t make it with my support.  I stopped at the Lake George Baking Company for my treat and Cafe Vero for my latte to go with and sat in Shepard Park.

snack

I love Cafe Vero. They roast their own coffee and the baristas are well trained.  They always do latte art.  It’s a bit pricey, but worth it.

My view while nomming:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I texted John to let him know what he was missing!   😈

Then it was time to say goodbye to the lake and head on up the mountain.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s a 2 mile climb for a while and so I didn’t stop to take any pictures.  I did stop more on this trip in general just to enjoy, though.  By myself – I can do whatever I want and stop whenever I want!  After the 2 mile climb, you are greeted by Santa and Uncle Sam.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ah yes.  Lake George, the mix of natural beauty and the tacky.

I took part of the canal path on the way home.  Some of this is being worked on, so we have to detour around it, but I got on part of it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Closer look at these guys jetting away when I stopped.  Can you see them in the pic above?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Before I knew it – I was home!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

33 miles today that felt great.  I am ready for Saratoga now.  I have the mind rumblings to do a 100 mile day again.  😀

Have a great rest of the weekend and I will be back with an AIM post on Monday!

Early morning ride

It was very cold this morning when I got up.  It had to be close to 50 degrees.   I had some quick fuel of whey protein, almond milk and applesauce.

I was in pants and a jacket and my eyes watered a bit when I started.  Yep, fall is definitely coming.  It was sunny out and quite a beautiful ride.  I pulled over once on this side street for a couple shots.

There was a hot air balloon up today.  I can’t even imagine how cold it was way up there!

Brrrr!!!!

Good ride today. 13 miles.  This took me an hour.

Yay!

Only 12 more miles to go for 400 this month.  That distance is exactly as much as a ride to breakfast or yogurt.  How convenient! Hmmm…. tomorrow I will just have to do one of those to get the distance

It was still chilly when I got back, so I made up some banana oats topped with coconut butter and strawberry jam.

Cold weather means you know who is now snuggle cat.

Don’t you like how she holds my arm?  When she lays all the way down, she will curl her leg all the way around my arm. I don’t know why she does that, but it’s cute.

Lunch:

Fage with frozen blueberries and some granola.  This is really good!  I should have saved this for tomorrow when the temps are going to be in the mid 80s.

The day went pretty fast as it was busy at work.  I needed my brain break of a latte, which I didn’t get a good picture of, but you don’t need that anyway. Just trust me that I enjoyed it 😀

I managed to avoid having any coconut M&Ms, which are currently in the house (hidden). I was also looking online at cameras during my break.  We were at my sister’s house last night and she casually mentioned that she got a new digital camera because her old one broke.  I asked what kind and she said a Rebel!  That’s *my* dream camera!

Color me green, green, green!  No camera for me this year with the new driveway and flooring.  I’ll just have to steal play with hers.

Dinner time and I am still on the potato bandwagon.  This time topped with ground beef, laughing cow and hot sauce.

I am burning through this hot sauce bottle, too. Har, har.  Unpictured are the tortilla chips I munched on while getting dinner ready.  Ooops.

I’ve got tutoring tonight.  It’s been going pretty well.  This learner seems fairly motivated, although she young children and sometimes has to cancel meetings because of various things that come up with them.  Once school starts next week, hopefully things will settle down for her and she can really concentrate on herself.

Tomorrow is my monthly goal wrap up.  Already!  I didn’t make all of them, but good progress.

Mohawk Towpath ride and new biking partner!

John is off visiting his family in Colorado this week, so I had to round up another biking partner for the weekend!  My sister and I do things together, usually at her suggestion, which has included things like the Becoming and Outdoors Woman, Camp N Pack – in freezing weather, ice fishing in gale force winds, etc.  Now it was my turn. A month or so ago, I asked my sister if she would be interested in doing a ride that was a casual 36 mile ride.  I wanted to give her time to work on the bike as she isn’t a biker.  She agreed and we decided to do the Bike the Byway, which was an organized ride that went along the Mohawk river with stops at historic sites of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers and the Erie Canal.

It really was a casual ride.  There were about 16 people on the ride.  We chose this for its casual pace seeing as it was Colleen’s first really long bike ride in a few years.  We had a lot of stops.  9 in all.  I will try not to put in too many pictures!

If you follow the canal, you could go to either place.  This used to be a railway stop as well.  We were about 6 miles into the ride here.

We were tooling along about about a 12 mph pace, which was really perfect.  There weren’t too many hills for the first part.  Of course, then I blew a front tire around mile 15 or so.  It had to happen, right?  It exploded, too, and scared people LOL!  I just pulled over and changed the tire.  Good thing I have experience with that….   Colleen said we should have taken a picture, but really, who wants to remember that?  I have plenty of flat tire pictures I could insert here  😀

Anyway, the rest of the group headed on while I changed the tire.  Then we caught up to them at the next stop, where there were refreshments waiting for us!

Cookies!  Plus lemonade and water.  We had stopped at one of the locks of the canal here.

At each stop, we learned about the history of the towpath and the Erie canal and how it shaped the towns in the area.  Pretty cool stuff!

We then went a bit further for a rest stop at a local orchard store.  The ride organizer had called ahead to see if we could use their facilities, which they agreed to.

This was the cutest place!

It was like a country store inside, too.  They served some type of food, but I am not sure what it was.  Definitely need to come back to this next time we are in this area!

The next stop was the Vischer Ferry Power Plant.  Lots of hydro along the Mohawk.

My sister works for the DEC and part of her job is making sure the hydro plants don’t hurt the fishies.  We were joking that she could have charged time for work stopping at all the hydro plants 😀

Next stop?

I love Vischer Ferry.  I would love to live here.  It’s a Greek Revival style town that was built on waterway traffic.  It’s so beautiful.

It was really starting to get hot and humid.  You can see how loose my helmet strap was getting. When it gets really wet from sweat, it starts to slip the buckle.  We had our protein bars here for some fuel.  It sure felt good to get back on the bikes and make some breeze to cool off.

We got back on the bike path for a bit and ended up at this little parking area.    This was around mile 28. Note the really dark sky in the background. Foreshadowing…

We had more cookies and drinks here.  Two really nice women had baked up treats for us and brought them to 3 of our stops along the ride.  How nice is that?  They packed up their car and moved the stuff around.  Me and my sis!  She was doing pretty well on the ride and she wasn’t hating me. She’s much taller than I am, too.

Shortly after we left this stop, we could hear thunder and then it started pouring!

It only lasted about 10 minutes, though.  Then it stopped and we hit the next point of interest.

How cool is that?  Of course, it came about because of the waterway.

Then we biked to where the Mohawk and Hudson rivers diverge.

They have a really nice promenade here.

It seems like more of our stops were all squished together at the end.  This ride actually took a long time because we stopped so much.

Our next stop was the Cohoes Falls.  Even though the water level was low, still very beautiful!

We were up above it all.  (more hydro plants)

Then we got back on the bike path and headed back to the starting point.  It was basically one large circle all around.  I know Colleen was pretty tired by that point, but she made it!

I am so proud of her for doing all 36 miles!  I hope I can get her to do more biking with us and didn’t scare her away 😀
