I’m bringing the Friday posts back! Okay, nothing is blooming yet, but at least we have some green now 😀 Everything is pretty late. This is the front bed as of today:
Mostly irises, tulips and allium. Some plants are still dormant – or I hope dormant and not dead LOL.
The closest to a bloom so far:
I’d say maybe 2 more weeks before the bloom if we get some warmer weather to help it along.
The rhododendron is looking not too bad after the winter. This was the plant I did a rejuvenation prune on in 2016 and thought I had killed it.
It should green up pretty soon. It’s already started at the bottom.
Another rejuvenation prune happened in the back. There was a mess of something here that was a mix of viburnum (I think), bittersweet and some other treeish thing all mushed together. It was top heavy and lopsided due to lack of care over the years.
I wanted to take the whole thing out, but the weather turned bad before I could really finish after chopping most of it down. I decided I’m going to wait and see if it sprouts at the bottom or if I just killed it. I’m fine with either option other than having to dig out the stump later if it doesn’t make it, which I think will be the likely outcome.
At the base of this, I saw my cyclamen popped up:
These should bloom this year and I’m excited about that!
The back garden bed after I cleaned most of it out:
It amazes me every year how it goes from the above to this:
I am afraid that we may have lost the magnolia tree:
All of the leaves fell off it in the early summer last year and I don’t see any signs so far. It could still be alive, but that would suck to lose this big tree in the back.
Shade garden coming alive. Here is the Lady’s Mantle:
The big shade garden is under our Honey Locust tree. That tree is 3 seasons of mess. All of that crap is from the Honey Locust – and a few maple twirlers for good measure. When it all dries out, I’ll use the leaf blower to clean it out.
Dutchman’s Breeches:
I reallllllly hope these bloom this year. They are finicky, so I have my fingers crossed because the blooms are very cool.
I’ve got to organize for my conference trip this week. I leave on Wednesday and have to pack up our display and samples and then find room for my own clothes and stuff LOL. I will be getting on the bike, though. Cool weather or not.
And remember:
Have a good weekend!
That Magnolia looks well established Lori.. It would be strange for it to just up and die like that.. Did you have a long hot dry spell that you didn’t water it?? If it was late summer i wouldn’t be as worried about it because some trees just can’t handle the late summer heat and will start to turn their leaves and give up the ghost early so to speak but still come back in the Spring… The Black Walnut is like that here.. … Everything else is coming along nicely… looking forward to your Friday bloom posts! Good luck on your convention. Hugs! deb
We don’t get that hot here and the leaves dropped so early that I was concerned last year about it. We’ll see. It could just be late!
Pretty soon your garden is going to be full of blooms! Do you think maybe the moles/voles got to the magnolia tree?? Anyway, fingers crossed that the magnolia will come back to life, and that you will have blooms soon!
How are your hostas doing? It’s so bizarre to see you with just a tiny bit of green popping up, when we have full on lush greenery and blooms – and my New York hostas are thriving, thank you very much again!
They are just tiny nubbins poking out of the ground now. We have some warm weather coming up, so they should come out more this week.
