Lifting and liquor

I was up and ready to take my body that I love so much to the gym!  There actually was no one in the free weights section – Squeeee!!! Privacy!  I even took a picture.

To the left is what is called the cardio deck.  It is a raised area in the center of the gym with the treadmills, bikes and other cardio machines.  You can look down on everyone in the other 2 sections while you get your sweat on.

Exercise Set/rep/weight Muscle worked
Deadlift 3 sets of 10 with 65# bar Lower body
Dumbbell Pull Over 3 sets of 10 with 25# DB Back
Barbell Chest Press 3 sets of 10 with 55# bar Chest
Reverse Crunches 3 sets of 12 Core
Nosebreakers 3 sets of 10 with 25# bar Triceps
Good Mornings 3 sets of 10 with 55# bar Low back and hamstrings
Bent Lateral Raise 3 sets of 10 with 15# DBs (30# total) Shoulders
Standing Calf Raise 3 sets of 10 at 80# Calves

This workout took about 35 minutes.  I am surrounded by iron here!

It was very fall today with wind, bright colors and dark clouds. This was taken from my bank drive through on the way home 😀

I got home to cook up breakfast.  Pumpkin Brown Rice pudding:

In a pot, mix

  • 1 cup cooked brown rice
  • 1 cup 2% milk (or whatever milk)
  • 1 tablespoon of maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon of butter (you can omit, not sure it added anything)
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of Craisins
Cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes.  Then add 1/2 cup canned pumpkin.  Temper in an egg and cook for another couple minutes.  Divide between 2 bowls. Top each with 10 grams of toasted pecans.

This was very good, although I *really* don’t like waiting that long for breakfast.  I like 10 minutes tops for cooking.  It’s  easier to do pumpkin oats, but a nice change.

Busy work day.  It’s a nice steady time of year now until the holidays.

When it was time for lunch, I went with the standard on a dinner-out night:
Feta and broccoli omelet.

John made up lattes today, this one was 2% milk:
Which I paired with some dried pineapple.
I told myself no candy corn today.  Because I can quit any time, really I can.

So, this was the week John won the football picks.  My long streak finally ended.  His choice?  Moe’s.

I got a rice bowl with pork underneath all those jalapenos!
This bowl was minus the beans.  I also realize I had rice twice in one day.

Congratulations John.  May this be the first of many winning meals.  (Did I mention yet that it was National Sarcasm Month?)

After dinner, I got John his dessert at Panera Bread.  Where I might have picked up this cookie:

I might have eaten it, too.  Just sayin’…

We also did a stock up of our liquor cabinet since it was payday and all.  We have been out of a few things.  We don’t drink a lot, but there are a couple things we like to have on hand.

Amarula is an unusual vanilla cream liqueur with hints of spice and fruit.  It’s good in coffee!  We also got bourbon because eggnog season is coming up.  And the pumpkin pie liqueur just sounded good because I am in pumpkin overload mode about now.  The honey whiskey? Trial bottle.  Good for what ails you 😀  This stuff will last us a couple years.

Pink item of the day was spotted at Panera Bread.  Very appropriate, I might add:

The trees are beautiful!! I have some brown rice that needs using and might try your recipe. My husband refuses to eat it..well, we tried.

Can I mention John looks a little like a boy who just got candy?!? He’s not happy about winning the picks is he? 😛 LOL

John looks quite pleased with his winning meal!

My recovery coffee arrived today!!! Smells so good – my manservant came home and will brew us a pot tomorrow morning…can’t wait! Thank you so much!

    LOVE iron maiden days. 🙂

Cutest cookie and I’m thinking I need to try a rice bowl now. Yum!
Gonna try to find that liqueur!

I’m loving the fall colors you have. So pretty.

Oooh, spirits, my favorite thing, next to wine that is! Amarula is actually made from a fruit grown in South Africa on the Marula tree. I just love it! Don’t even open that honey whiskey…you will get hooked it is so good.

I like the looks and the idea of the rice pudding breakfast. If the rice is already cooked, why do you need to cook it for so long? To make it gel? Also, looks like you might have answered a question I have. I have a bottle of brandy that I got last year to make a fruit cake for my mom. I guess its still good this year? Its actually still just sitting on my countertop, I think.

The cooking releases more starch and thickens it up. Otherwise it is just a watery bowl of milk and rice.

I think alcohol is pretty much good forever.

I GRIN when I see you in the weight room.
and wonder if people think youre NUTS—as they did me yesterday :)–for snapping pics!

My questions: Are you often the only woman (aka Lone Wolf) in the free weights room? Do you work out with hubby, by yourself, or with a friend? Do you know the guys who work out by you?

I am generally the Lone Wolf woman in the free weights area of my gym in the morning, but I do know many of the guys around me, who, for the most part, think I’m a great weightlifter and, me, vice versa. We talk about what goals we’re working on, what we could do better, and a little joking.

I am usually the only woman in the free weight section. I am new to this gym, so haven’t really met anyone. I tend to be somewhat reserved at the gym (and in real life) as I need to get my stuff done and get to work.
At my old gym, I did talk to people there.

John doesn’t lift LOL! I wish I could get him to, but he doesn’t like it that much.

Always inspiring to see you in the gym Lori! Hubs really only drinks one kind of liquor. Its called Asbach and he mixes it with Coke. Me? Give me any kind of fruity girly drink thats full of calories and i’m pretty happy. 🙂 But if i’m trying to watch the calories its rum and diet coke. Bottle in our house last forever too and as far as i know they don’t go bad. We keep some in the freezer.Great post Lori! Hope you win the football picks this week….oops sorry John , us girls have to stick together… 🙂

All those liqours sound like they’d be tasty but I am so finnicky about booze that I hate spending $10-$20 on a bottle only to toss it afterwards. Not fun. Wish they had mini bottles of all those because the pumpkin and vanilla *sound* like they’d be amazing!!

    1. Lori Post author

If you go to a larger liquor store, they often have tasting samples of bottles. That was how I tried the Amarula and loved it.

You had a great workout. Eat well to refuel.
As for that bowl topped with ALL THOSE jalapenos, just a suggestion but… I would be VERY careful if you go on a long bike ride – know what I mean 😉
    Have a super weekend.

Ok so I’m going to sound like a boozer but I just have to ask if you’ve tried the Egg Nog liquor? It’s called Pennsylvania Dutch (google it). I’m not even a huge fan of eggnog but I’ll take a shot of that liquor anytime LOL! It’s all my manicurists fault. She is the one who introduced me to the stuff.

John better watch it – I predict you’ll wipe that evil pick winning grin right off his face this week. Come to think of it, I need to do that to Mr. Helen too.

    1. Lori Post author

I wouldn’t worry about *you* sounding like a boozer. You aren’t the one who posted a picture of 4 liquor bottles on her blog…

We did try that nog liquor. I think we had the Jack Daniels one? Strong!!!!

  12. Roz

Hi Lori, WOW…that tree is stunning!!!! Pumpkin pie liquor?? That sounds really interesting!!! Have a wonderful Friday.

  13. dawn

I definitely had to see what kind of liquor you were buying lol 🙂 looks good minus the whiskey lol.

An empty gym, what is that? Don’t think I’ve ever seen it where I go.

  14. Jody - Fit at 53

I LOVE being surrounded by weights!!! Yes to that! And the fall colors – amazing! I miss that here.

As for that cookie, I might have eaten that too! 🙂

Never heard of that vanilla cream liqueur but something that sounds good for a treat coffee drink! 😉

  15. Fran

I hope John enjoyed his meal 🙂 because we both know Team Lori is going for the winning this season.

I used to love it when there was almost nobody at the gym (never had it all to myself). I don’t like crowded places.

Gotta share an inside joke about the Pink Ribbon Bagels. They are our favorite of all the Panera specialty bagels and Mr. B can’t ever remember which month it is they arrive. He knows it’s in the fall, so come August, he starts asking when he might expect the BREAST Bagels. I finally said a couple of weeks ago it was time to go get a Breast Bagel. He got all excited (about the bagel, of course!!). A very serious subject, Panera’s effort to support a good cause, but still love a way to make it fun! Hope you and John enjoy several of them this month!
