Flower show part 2

After the orchid area of the show, you enter into what is normally the ice hockey arena for the college. They transform it into the garden wonderland in just a few days.

It’s amazing that all this is temporary and comes down after 3 days.  So much work.

Chicken coop and waterfall, complete with skunk:

.

Flower bed — get it??!!

Pretty sure this goat isn’t real. 😀

Succulent wall (Shelley, I thought of you!)

This year there were a lot of ranunculus blooms.

I got a bee in my bonnet, so to speak, after the show and picked up some ranunculus bulbs to grow. They are annuals here, but I’ll try anything once!

This would make a nice outdoor wedding venue. There was a nice raised dais on the right.

Lots of water features.  The hyacinths smelled so good, too. Just like spring.

The sand artist was in attendance again. He works on the sculpture the entire weekend and it isn’t finished until Sunday.

I’m not sure how he paints the sand, but the colors are striking.

Eagle at the top with a fish getting ready to feed those hungry babies!

In another section, there were the floral arrangements. It was a competition and winners were chosen for the different themes.

I didn’t color edit that photo. It just came out like that. The lighting was just right.

I’m not sure how they colored these roses. Maybe airbrushing?

Very striking:

Tablescapes:

And my very favorite plant of the whole show:

Beehive ginger. Aptly named, don’t you think?  I guess it is super fussy to grow, but a part of me would like to give it a whirl. Maybe being ginger it would be too spicy for Ms. Pixie to nosh on 😀

Garden & Flower Show – Orchidpalooza

It’s that time of year! The Capital District Garden & Flower Show! This year I was accompanied by my sis, BIL and one of the nieces.  I’ll take anyone that wants to go (or not LOL ).

Today, I’ll focus on the orchid display.  As more of an outdoor gardener, I don’t know a whole lot about orchids other than seeing the Phalaenopsis type at the big box stores marketed as the easy-to-grow orchids.  So, I’m sharing while learning.

Orchids are one of the largest groups of flowers with over 28,000 species! I had no idea there were that many.

They are really adaptable, too, and not just found in the dark tropical jungles.

.

This one is one of my favorites:

Aren’t they gorgeous?  I want to try orchids again. When we moved to this house, my orchid that I got to bloom once died and I haven’t tried since, but these make me want to get more.

Capital District Flower Show

Happy Spring!!  It’s finally here. Of course, the first day of spring and it didn’t even make it to 40 degrees, but the flower show made up for that 😀

We took my mother down to see all the flowers. This event is held at the Hudson Valley Community College and they set it up in 4 days.  The first part of the show was the floral arrangment area. This is where people submit themed arrangements such as the Hand Picked:

Fantasy Flowers:

Garment District:

That seems very Project Runway, doesn’t it?

Next was the garden club area. The daylily society, Audubon, hosta, ect. Plus the orchid growers:

IMG_2098b

Is this orchid the most amazing blue or what? Makes me want to get one.

Then the big displays. The theme was  vision of middle earth or something like that. It’s Hobbiton!

It blows my mind that they can do this in 4 days. Blows my mind.

This area smelled amazing with all the blooming hyacinth:

Then the sand sculptor with the never finished project:

Then it was time for shopping. Funny bit – I felt someone tug at my shoulder and I figured I dropped something – and it turns out to be my dentist LOL! We had talked about the flower show at my last appointment. Guess he came down to spend all that root canal money I gave him…

In the vendor section, we met up with a customer of John’s business who was selling her soap.  They are from PA. It’s always nice to put a face to a name!

IMG_2165b

I bought a couple bars. I might have to do this show next year.

My mom and I each bought one of these garden stakes:

IMG_2164

This will look really cute over a pot of flowers.

I also bought some bulbs called Japanese Wonder Flowers. I don’t know how well they will grow or anything, but I couldn’t resist. Normally I like to plan where stuff goes and then buy plants, but like every gardener out there – I will see something I like and then figure out a home for it later! (AKA sucker).

I’ll stop here so I don’t blow up your reader with pictures. It was hard enough paring the photos down. I need to start a garden blog.  Now I have lots of ideas and more excitement for the growing season – if that is even possible!

Capital District Flower Show!

Get ready for lots of pictures! I loved the flower show!  Of course, it was snowing on the way down there  🙄  There were a ton of different displays and entries into themed designs. There was a large room that was set up with landscaping by professionals.

WP_20150328_042

It smelled like fresh mulch in the room and it was heaven 😀  All of these displays were set up in an ice rink. It’s amazing that in 4 days they can transform an ice rink into an outdoor oasis.

Of course, this display won best in show.

There was a huge marketplace as well and I could have spent a billion dollars in there, but I managed to only spend $4 LOL. I bought 2 Astilibes for $2 each as a show special.  I just really enjoyed looked at all the blooms.

Now I really can’t wait to get out there in the garden!!

What’s blooming and flower arranging!

Today is a bit of a different What’s Blooming post.  My garden club (which meets once a month) met today at the home of someone who sells cut flower bouquets at farmer’s markets.  They actually just moved into this property 6 months ago and have already done a ton to it to get it ready for the season.  It’s a giant property.  I was totally jealous.

Here is a view of part of the cutting beds:

She just grows long rows of flowers for cutting.  Just to the left of these beds by the shade is the Battenkill river.

I about died from jealousy LOL.  What a great thing  to have at the end of your yard.  The house actually sits up quite high, so it is high above this.

These are all brand new beds and look really good for being so new.   Doesn’t it just look hot? We were back up to 90 degrees and I thought I might burst into flame, so I headed back to that shady river.

She grows a lot of zinnias and says that they are her big money maker.  The buds are really cool looking.

These are the buckets of flowers that they had cut this morning to make bouquets with.  This gray flower is call Ammi.  It is the gardener’s version of Queen Anne’s Lace.  It doesn’t lose all the little petals like QAL does – and looks a little fuller.

Mostly zinnias.

She talked about how to arrange flowers in vases.  Start with tall backbone greens like ferns or tall stiff flowers.  Then do a mid layer, then tuck in the smaller accent flowers.  Use the flowers in sets of 3 or an odd number for a better look.  She did these so fast!  This vase took 5 minutes.

So pretty.  I rarely bring in any flowers from my garden inside because I don’t want to cut into my plants!  I like to sit on the porch and look at them.

Here’s another fun tip – if you have a vase of tulips, add a shot of vodka to the water.  Apparently this really helps the tulips last longer!

Sigh…. I need more property.  Back to my little garden.

Here is my nicotiana:

I don’t know if these are *ever* going to do anything.  They should be taller and blooming by now.  Guess that was a garden fail – but, could end with a nice fall show.

I am officially declaring love for sweet potato vines.

These have been fun to look at this year.  See how we need to paint the porch?  My August goal.  When it gets cooler…

My sedum is in full “broccoli” mode now.

It’s even starting to turn color a bit.

It’s going to be a hot weekend.  It’s also John’s birthday on Saturday and he gets to be king for a day!

Stay cool!

What’s blooming!

Another Blooming Day has rolled around.  And what a gorgeous day, too.  We had lows last night at 40.  Not quite a freeze, but pretty darn cold.  I had brought in my seedlings just in case.

My garden is kind of just at the green stage right now.  I need to think about mid spring blooms after the tulips fade.

Anyway, lots of spiderwort coming up.  This stuff is pretty invasive, too.  It migrates.

I have more lily of the valley.  It is on the south side of the house and the north side.  The south side gets the sun and the plants flower early.  On the north side in full shade, the LOTV bloom a couple weeks later.  Hooray for extended bloom time!

I also lost some of my ferns from this funky winter, but one kind came up.

I got my hanging baskets together.  This is the purple allysum with flowering tobacco.  I am hoping hummingbirds come to the flowering tobacco.

(Excuse the porch – we are repainting it currently).  This will fill out nicely in a few weeks.  I have 3 of these hanging on the front porch.

This is the gerbera daisy with the sweet potato vines.

This will be an interesting combo.  I have heard the sweet potato vines can get really long.

I have 2 pots like this.

These pots sit at the top of the front steps.  I have 3 more big containers on the back porch that I need to get plants for, so maybe more green house shopping in my very near future!

We just got back from dinner with my folks. Today is my dad’s 71st birthday.   We have a warm weekend coming up and I get to meet another blogger this weekend!

What’s blooming today!

Happy Friday! I am glad the weekend is here, aren’t you? We had thunderstorms roll in around around 4 a.m., which kept me up for a while and then I didn’t wake up until almost 8 o’clock! That is super late for me.

I decided on Friday oats banana custard style.

Topped with coconut butter. These are a little more liquid than normal because I used 30 grams of oats instead of 40, but the same amount of egg whites.

I just could not get into work today.  It was not a productive morning and I made the executive decision to take some time off after lunch.  Speaking of lunch, I made up a 1-minute pumpkin muffin topped with peanut flour and blueberry jam.

Quick and tasty.

I headed out to do a little shopping.  Helen inspired me with her closet cleaning and shopping trip.  I went to one of my favorite places:

I got a pair of jeans for $6!  Score! This place lowers the price on items every 2 weeks, so sometimes you can get real bargains, particularly with pants since they have so many.  I was actually hoping to get more things, but nothing else really struck me as a have-to-have item.

I stopped for a treat on the way home as John requested something.  I went to Chocolate mill to get a cranberry pecan scone and a maple twist, which we split so we could each try one.

(not sure why I am pointing at the maple twist)

This went really well with my latte!

The garden still has some color in it.  I have some long bloomers in there.  It was rainy today, so today’s shots are a bit gray.  The mums are all out in force now.

This mum is all stunted and I don’t know why.  I think Japanese beetles got to it earlier in the spring and it just didn’t  recover very well.

My burning bush is turning now. Gaillardas in front:

A new coneflower bloom.

I have a stray spiderwort that appeared and now has a bloom on it.

New buds on the knockout rose.  Crazy plant!

I just really liked the raindrops on this:

Another scentimental bloom as well.  I had to hold it up because it was drooping from the rain.

Some of our fall decorations:

My milkshake coneflower has a bunch of buds on it.  If we don’t get a freeze in the next week or so, they might actually bloom!  It’s been a very mild fall so far except for a couple days.  And lots of rain.  Too much rain!  We really don’t need any more.

Time for dinner! I cooked up some chicken thighs and broccoli while John cut up a pineapple.  My plate.

John’s plate had pineapple, chicken and potato chips 😀

I think it’s movie night tonight and a low-key weekend on tap.

Pink item of the day? My work shoes!

The Breast Cancer Site

What’s Blooming Today!

Friday!  I woke up with no ill effects from the attempted blood donation yesterday. No bruise, surprisingly.  My arm is sore, but no bruise. There is a weird little tingly sensation down my arm when I rub it, though.  That is weird.  We had frost last night.  Brrrr!  I decide to put off the daily walk until evening.  Instead, I commenced to breakfast.  Here is something different:

2 of the ricotta puffs with apple cranberry topping. This was warm and filling.

I got right to work and rocked out today!  Yay!  Pixie was off and on my lap all day because it is cold.  Here she is on her throne:

I had to use up some Fage for lunch today.  I mixed it with pumpkin, flax meal, cinnamon and drizzled with honey.

This made me cold!

The garden seemed to survive the frost.  A few things were nipped by frost.  Some of my mums:

Yellow mums:

The knockout rose bush and sedum.

Coneflowers still blooming.

Here was a little bee that is so lethargic I could touch it.  He will sleep on this flower all night now.

Sentimental bush:

I covered this bush up with a blanket to protect the other buds from frost.

Browalia blooming again.  I am surprised these annuals made it through the frost.

Still looking pretty good for early October.

Latte time! With one of John’s cookies. I have to get John to link to the recipe. I know he found it on Food Network.

Not in focus very well – sorry about that!

We cooked a crockpot meal for dinner.  I might post this one next week. It is teriyaki chicken.  John made the brown rice in the pressure cooker.

I took a post dinner walk.  My neighbors are all decorated for Halloween:

We still need to get out our fall stuff!

Today’s pink picture – my shoes!

A gorgeous weekend coming up and I can’t wait to get on the bike!

What’s Blooming Today!

it’s Friday! This week went by so fast, didn’t it? Yesterday was pretty dreary round here, although it was quite warm so John and I decided to walk up the street for ice cream. I ended up eating caramel apple sundae and I was way too full last night. Oops.

That meant a lighter breakfast today. I made up some of my protein waffles. I had half of a batch topped with some sautéed bananas and coconut butter.

I really love this combo.

I started work early and then decided to take a walk. No more running for me. It’s kind of a relief to say that. I can do just fine walking, biking, and lifting weights.

The other half of my protein waffles made an appearance at lunch. I just know you all were wondering what happened to the other half. I had cooked up a couple eggs this morning, so I made some egg salad. It’s funny how I keep saying I love egg salad so much and yet I don’t eat it all that often.

Now on to the blooms! I am so pleased that my garden looks so good at this time of year. There are still a lot of blooms and some of my plants are sending up new shoots.

There was another stray bloom on the clematis:

The sedum keeps getting darker and darker.

I had to get a picture of my pale hand in there so you can see how dark it is.

My garden also has a sense of humor. One of the irises I planted appears to have grown a middle finger  :

White snapdragons are blooming again.

The amazing knockout rose:

And my fall flag is officially up! Guess I should have ironed it  😳

Time to celebrate fall with a latte! John made up special lattes today. This was made using the Godiva Pumpkin Spice coffee I received from the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program.  I love getting free stuff, especially coffee!

Good coffee, although really strongly flavored. We have to cut it with a little regular coffee when brewing straight up.  John used it full strength in the espresso machine and then topped the steamed milk with a little homemade dulce de leche and cinnamon.

Fall in a cup. Especially paired with chocolate 😀

It’s been a hard work day to stay concentrated. Friday afternoon and all that.  Plus there was a lot of kitty love going on:

I had the camera up at my chin. She is kneading on my arm here and has her “stoner” look as I call it. It’s nice to be loved.

I was glad for dinner time to finally roll around.  Even though it was a staple dinner.

Although this pear was the most apple-y pear I have ever eaten. It was somewhat round, too. If it didn’t have the pear texture, I would have thought it was an apple!

Lot of rain in store this weekend. Hoping to get the bikes out on Sunday, but there is plenty of stuff to do around here. Lots of festivals and shows.

Have a great weekend!

What’s Blooming!

Friday!  Woo Hoo!  My Friday dance today?  Dancing on the pedals!

I took a quick 6.5 mile spin before breakfast today.  I had to wear a long sleeve shirt because of how cool it was.  I wouldn’t have needed that running, but you feel much cooler biking because of the breeze (which is lovely most times). I did 6.75 miles before breakfast.

Came home and had another waffle problem. I forgot the baking powder in my waffles and they didn’t rise, so I had trouble getting them out of the iron.

Breakfast spaetzle anyone? At least  the taste was fine 😀

Pretty standard day today.  Busy, quiet.  I was ready for lunch soon enough.

Broccoli stuffed omelet topped with laughing cow.  Yum! Funny how I almost never eat omelets for breakfast unless we go out to eat.

Garden is still blooming.   The Autumn Joy sedum is changing color now.

The Four O’clocks. They smell so nice!

Potted mums.  My garden ones have not bloomed yet.

The heliopsis clematis has more blooms again.  The blooms have 3 stages.  The lantern stage:

Which then morphs to this:

And the final stage of the seed head:

All 3 of those are going right now on this plant.  It is quite large.

My butterfly bush (buddelia).

Annual asters in multiple colors:

Okay, you will either find this cute or you will roll your eyes.  It was latte time.

John: Any request from your barista today?

Me: Just a kiss with my latte

John: I’ll give you 2

The boneless pork ribs were thawed out for dinner today.  I put them in some mesquite marinade and threw them on the grill.  They were sooooo good!

I am so glad there are leftovers of these 😀

After dinner, I went out for another bike loop just because.  I love my bike.  Tomorrow is long ride day and it will be a cupcake ride!  I am excited – I know you have all missed the cuppicakes, too.
