Fall colors

What a gorgeous weekend we had here!  It was cooler and breezy on Saturday, but sunny.  John’s folks are safely back in Colorado and we have a lot of projects to catch up on.  I started working on my door:

The finish looks better in the photo than it does in real life. I am hoping that once I get the finish off , the trim pieces I put on can be stained to match. I would rather have a wood look than painted, but this still remains to be seen.  I do love the color that’s coming out.

I have to say that I hate working with strippers (hello Google creepers!) They are gunky and messy.  Turns out you can remove old varnish using acetone. Basically nail polish remover! So, I am scrubbing off the remaining sticky stuff with a mix of odorless mineral spirits and the acetone.

The days have been warmer and beautiful, but the nights have been so cold! We got into the 30s last night.  John and I decided to go for a morning bike ride for breakfast anyway.  We got some new gear for cold riding, included our face masks – known as balaclava.  Actually sounds better as baklava, doesn’t it?

I told John we needed to make sure we took the masks off before we went into the coffeeshop for breakfast so they didn’t think we were going to rob them.

I have to say the best thing about the mask is that it is long enough to cover my throat, which usually gets really cold at the top of my jacket.  I also was wearing fleece-lined leggings underneath my bike pants. Whomever invented the fleece-lined leggings, Thank You!  They are great!  I think I will be able to ride into the 30s with this getup.

This was so nice to have for breakfast. Hot coffee and a muffin!

It still wasn’t that much warmer after breakfast, but the sun was out and we ended up with a 15 mile ride for the morning.  I took a few pictures of the colors:

We saw a bald eagle soaring, too.  It was beautiful. Then we could hear the call. Such a majestic bird.  I was going to take a picture, but I didn’t have a zoom and sometimes it is better just to enjoy something in real time rather than take a picture.

I did get a plane, though!

We should be reaching peak pretty soon.  I am hoping to go on a hike tomorrow if work isn’t too busy – the weather is supposed to reach 70 degrees, too!

Do John’s glasses steam up with the balaclava? I have that problem with scarves. It sure is beautiful there now.

I wear glasses as well and they didn’t fog up until I came to a stop. I had the hood over my nose and not, neither time did I fog up until we stopped.

Thanks, Lori! Maybe the fabric acts differently than a scarf, I may give it a try if I can quiet my inner weather wimp.

Yep, don’t do your banking in the balaclava. I read another blog and when she needed to buy a stripper it was pretty funny. Hope this comment doesn’t set off the internet alarms.

Love that face mask – I have a neck gaiter that I’ve pulled up over my nose on very cold mornings when I go running. Glad the cold weather gear is letting you ride longer this season. 🙂

What a gorgeous fall tree! WOW, just WOW.

The colors are pretty. Not sure if they are going to be quite as nice this year because of the warmth, but they are a little late.

I like that balaclava (and baklava too) because my nose gets so cold in the winter. And the tree colors–just glorious. Everything’s still pretty green (and brown) around here. It sounds funny to hear you saying its a mild fall with temps falling into the 30’s. But I know what you mean. Here’s hoping you’ll have a mild winter as well 🙂

The 30s aren’t the mild part, it’s the warming up to the 60s that is mild LOL. I really hope that we will have a mild winter, but I don’t think that will be the case.

Every time I see a balaclava, my mind says baklava. I’m so enjoying our mild fall as well. The longer this lasts, the better IMHO.

We’re hoping to get out for our foliage drive this weekend so I’m hoping the coming rain won’t pull all the leaves off the trees.

We were in Lake George Mon-Wed last week. Took some day trips to Saratoga National Park and Lake Placid, and Schroon Lake. I was afraid the weather would be bad from Joaquin, but it was gorgeous. My sister, my mom, and me enjoyed our mini vacation in your neck of the woods.

You look like ninja’s 🙂 but hey if it helps, who cares what it looks like. Hopefully you can ride a bit longer this year.

I love fall, the colors are so pretty.

when I worked at REI I had the hardest time remembering that word and would always call it–to the dismay of my manager–baklava.
