The scale can be so annoying

Hope you all had a great 4th of July! We had a nice relaxing day. I actually ended up not having to work, which was a bonus, so we had a nice rest day.  We watched another stage of the Tour de France last night!  I was saying to John, what is it about men in lycra riding a bike that is so exciting?  Not sure what, but it is.  We didn’t watch any fireworks.  I hate the crowds and we actually can see fireworks every week in the summer if we want.  They go off in several places each week – for the tourists in Lake George, mostly, but some for us locals big grin.

It was off for the gym this morning with my preworkout shake.

Exercise Set/rep/weight
1. Crunches on stability ball 2 sets of 15
2. Complex: High Pull, Front Squat/Push Press, Back Squat, Good Morning 4 sets of 8 each exercise with 20# bar
3A.  Deadlift 3 sets of 10 with 65# bar
3B. Dumbbell Overhead Press with rotation 3 sets of 10 with 10# DB
3C. Single Leg Squat 3 sets of 10
3D. Bent Over Row 3 sets of 10 with 50# bar

The gym was really empty today. Post holiday, maybe? I was glad to have the free weights side to myself today. That doesn’t happen too often.

I came home and made a breakfast pudding.

Then we had the Tour on live.  There are a few times a year when I really watch a lot of TV.  Football Sundays and the Tour de France.  It does get in the way a bit with my productivity, though!

So, regarding the post title – I was feeling rather, how shall I say it, lumpy at the gym today.  Part of it was heat and part of it was just how it goes sometimes.

There are times when the scale really annoys me.  I know it doesn’t define me and the number doesn’t mean anything, blah, blah, blah, but boy it can be bothersome.  Last December I gained 8 pounds during that month.  That freaked me out because I wasn’t really all that bad eating wise to deserve that much weight gain.  Then that led to all the testing with my red eyes and the thought of thyroid issues that happened in January.  Remember that?

Well, it took me 6 flipping months to lose that 8 pounds that went on in 30 days.  6 months.  A couple days before I left for BOW, I had finally gotten off that 8 pounds.  (We just won’t talk about the other 10 that are my nemesis.).

Just out of curiosity, I got on the scale on Monday morning and had put on 6 of those 8 in 3 days.  Yes, most of that was water weight, but it still is actually “I have to carry it around and try to button my pants” weight.  It doesn’t matter whether that weight is water, muscle, fat, stomach contents – whatever. That is what annoyed me.  I actually am someone who does need to weigh myself – I don’t do well with no scale.  I have tried that a few times and it just doesn’t work for me.  Interesting that it affects my mindset more not to weigh myself than to step on the scale a couple times a week. Now, I dropped 4 of those pounds right away, but a couple stuck around, which I attribute to M&Ms and PB cups.  I ate a lot of those – and by a lot, I really mean a lot. I don’t mess around when I eat that stuff, and that is the main reason those things really don’t come into my house.

Anyway, normally I am not bothered by the scale, but I just had to get that off my chest.

Lunch time! A nice summer lunch of Fage, blueberry topping and Perky flax cereal.

I might buy that cereal again because I just like the name.  This box has lasted me months, I have to say, which is good.

Work was fairly busy today, surprisingly so considering the holiday yesterday and the fact that it is the last day of the pay period and everybody works.

I was really tired, though.  Like can’t keep my eyes open kind of tired.  Maybe the heat?  I made up a latte to wake myself up.

It’s not horribly hot today like it will be the next few days, so I had a hot latte.  Or not too hot.  I can control the drink temperature at home.

I was glad when dinner rolled around.  Pixie finally decided to wake up for a bit after sleeping next to me all day.  Oh the life of a cat.

She would like to be out there.

Dinner:

Standard and quick.  I have literacy tutoring tonight and lots of stuff to do before that.

I have this packed in my bag to eat while tutoring.

:D

We have hot and humid weather rolling in tomorrow.  I hope to get in an early bike ride before it gets too hot.

  • I am not a fan of the scale and currently weigh in every three months or so on the doc’s scale.

The fage, blueberry topping and cereal looks really tasty.

Hope you are able to get a ride in.

P.S. I prefer the men on the field!

  • It’s so hot here and with this leg not healing I feel like a sea lion that at a moose that ate a seal. Ugh!

I have to use the scale too. It’s a necessary tool in my weight loss journey. But, it makes me crazy if I weigh myself more than once a week – which I did this week – and sure enough, a gain! Argh! I had to tell myself “Just back away from the scale…”

It was 102* here today with 104* expected tomorrow. I hope that doesn’t come your way.

  • I do understand the scale reaction. I don’t weigh very often, and I usually keep a level head about it. But then there are the other times. happy Heart trumps rationality sometimes.

My gym was deserted today, too! Wasn’t it wonderful?

  • I agree about the scale, it can be so annoying. I used to weigh once a week, but I haven’t weighed in about a month so I probably should … It’s hot here too but not so humid happy I hope you can get your ride in!

once a year needed or not.
and mainly because I could so so so put on 6 pounds over night as well.
my salty choices conspire against me that way.

  • “Heart trumps rationality sometime.” I love that Cammy!!

So because you ARE a frequent scale flyer, I suspect you were not surprised by the gain after the weekend. Not just because of the candy but also because I bet you’ve seen a trend after traveling that you gain a bit of weight. I know I do. Even when I’ve been positively angelic with my food intake I rarely, if ever, see a loss. Something about traveling and being off my regularly scheduled program.

I do feel your frustration with the quick gain and the slow loss though as I am exactly the same way.

  • I took my monthly comparison pictures yeasterday and because June was hard for me, I didn’t weigh myself. I guess I just wanted to bury my head in the sand. I’m behind in the FBB program schedule but at at least I’m doing it.

Pixie looks wonderfully fluffy in that picture. Do you think she’s an intuitive eater? happy

    • I am not sure if Pixie is an intuitive eater. She had rationed food because she gains easily, but she doesn’t get treats or anything like that. She is allowed her dry food free choice of a portioned amount.

  • I hate the scale but I have to weigh myself – it’s almost an obsession. I tried only weighing weekly but it doesn’t work, so I hop on every morning as soon as I get out of bed.

It really is crazy how pounds that come on so fast take SO LONG to leave sometimes. Oh to be 20 again…!

That ‘Simple’ bar looks good. I am on a coconut kick myself lately. It is high enough in (good) fat that it doesn’t take much to stave off hunger for a few hours.

  • I’m totally with you. When I got home from vacation I knew I had a few pounds to lose and I really dialed it in. I was accurate with my food counting and was under my calories every day. I exercised. I drank a ton of water. I limited sugar. And yet nothing! What?!?!

  • I have a very on/off relationship with the scale. Sometimes it seems like the ONLY way to judge how I’m doing, other times I’m “meh” and feel happier when my skirt is looser, and don’t care what the number says. Have a great Friday Lori!!

  • HI Lori – I am so screwed up with my blog reading lately – SORRY! I have got a bit of social media burn our & then I forget to go to my fave blogs! happy

OK – LOVE the name of that cereal!!!! happy

On the scale – I SO GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I am one that can gain so very easily & got worse with the hormone changes. I know I bitched & moaned on my blog about how the weight came on & stayed & I could do nothing to get it off SO I GET IT!!! I wish I could say something better but I think it is just part of some of us & our screwed up body types! winking Hard work & diligence always but you do look amazing & have really accomplished so much!

I will read your blooms tomorrow – hubby is calling for “our time”. He was playing online games with one of the crazy grandkids in Idaho & now we can have a bit of our time to watch some dvr’d shows.

Have a great weekend & I saw a bit of the blooms so know it is beautiful as always!

  • I’m sorry about your scale issues. My friend is in maintenance mode and she reminds me once in a while that the scale issues don’t stop just because you lose the weight. We think it’s our aging bodies…*sigh*

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

  • Forgot to say I loved the Pixie – pic! She does look quite awake there! happy

  • I believe my scale HATES me!!

  • Commenting late, but did want to say I so related to your thoughts about the scale and the unfair weight gain and how hard it is to get it off after. At least YOU got it off…

  • I understand your relation with the scale. I can’t do without it either. If I don’t weigh myself for a month I will gain. I weigh myself once a week and it keeps me on track. I gain easily, after the weekend you had, I would have gained too. As soon as I eat something different, less healthy, I gain.

I don’t watch the tour this year. I was disappointed when I found out Andy Schleck wasn’t riding this year due to injury and I haven’t seen much of it.
