I received a copy of Dollars to Donuts by Dawn Welch last week to review.
The premise of this cookbook is making the most of your pantry and cooking on a budget with appropriate meal planning and taking advantage of bargains. The recipes run the gamut from roasts to breakfasts to desserts. All of the recipes use ingredients you are likely to have on hand as well. What I really liked was that the recipes are not made up of processed foods to save time, but good real food and pretty healthy for the most part! The book looks lovely as well, with lots of pictures (I loves my pictures!) and a sprinkling of humor.
I tested out the Chicken and Dumplings (which you saw the other night), since we did indeed have everything on hand! My only substitution was using 1/2 whole wheat flour in the dumplings:
Dinner was on the table in 30 minutes and oh so yummy!
You can visit Dawn’s website here and see some of her recipes, as well as her pantry staple list, menu planner, and tips.
Next stop for me is probably the couscous with butternut squash and dried fruit.

My best money saving tip? I go through the grocery ads before I go to the store, so I know what’s on sale – that way I create my menu based on what’s on sale and what I have on hand.
My husband uses the crockpot a LOT….that’s how he saves time. 🙂

I can’t cook but maybe this will help me!!! 🙂 Since I can’t afford to fly you here!
Time saving tip: I cook multiple meals at once like my few chicken breasts OR a turkey meatloaf that will last a few days.
Money saving: I keep an eye out on the flyers for things I like that go on sale & I also get the flyers online!

Time and money tips?
Time…cook ahead. I like Sundays while my toddler is napping. I get my food processor out and oven on and make up dishes and sides for my l unches for the weeek. I RARELY ever eat out.
Money…cook at home. ha. no brainer there…I love not wasting food. I buy a lot of produce and my best tip for not wasting it is to get out my juicer on Saturday mornings and juice up what’s leftover.
then I know exactly what I need for my grocery run.
I am off to check out her site for a few inspirations and please sign me up!
I will def leave a blip on my post today about it, but I don’t use a “reader” but already have you on my blogroll…does that count?
Thanks LORI!
how fun

I love cookbooks with pictures!
My best tip? I shop almost exclusively at the cheapest market in town! I also do the same thing as others–cook large quantities of food and freeze it. This really saves me from eating something less than optimal when I am too tired to cook. I’m never too tired to take something out of the freezer and microwave it!

Money saving tip: I buy things like romaine lettuce and english cucumbers at my local Sam’s Club…we go through them fast enough that I can buy produce in bulk (and no, this would not have been a money-saver a couple of years ago – everything would have rotted before we ate it, lol). Getting six heads of lettuce for 3 bucks is a great bargain.
This cookbook looks really interesting and I love that it is not full of processed food!

one money saving tip… shop products on sale and buy fruits/vegetables that are in season. sometimes you can’t be too picky.
My time saving tip is the crock pot. I have collected a lot of recipe’s off the web that are low-fat/low-calorie that are great in the crock pot. Sparkpeoplerecipes.com is a great source. I love the dump a bunch of ingredients in and turn it on type, really saves time.
I have to be up with my kids by 5am on school days, so to save time, I make or prep breakfast the night before. You wouldn’t believe how many things can be premaade.

I buy meat at Costco, then freeze it in single serving sizes using a vacuum sealer. I can toss a bag into warm water and have meat unthawed for dinner in a very short time.
Love cookbooks! My money/time saving tip is two-fold: (1) plan meals ahead of time (one trip to the grocery store a week is ideal) and only buy what is on the list and (2) eat little meat for dinner. Maybe the second one is a bad idea but it is cheaper and helps me avoid the grocery store trying to have fresh meat.

Batch cooking is my money and time saving. I usually choose two hearty soups that have different flavor profiles but use similar base ingredients bought in bulk. Then they go into containers in the freezer and we have wonderful, homemade soup whenever we need a lunch or dinner.

I save time in the kitchen by letting the hubby do the cooking 🙂 Seriously. He’s good! He plans his meals by the month and never spends more than about 30 minutes prepping and cooking. My preferred method is to batch cook or drive through.
You and the cookbook give away have you’re very own blog post over at Finally Getting Fit. I don’t have you on my RSS. I find them (RSS feeds)very over-whelming. I have less than 10 fitness/health blogs that I read daily in my sidebar. You are at the top. Love ya.

Stop by your blog daily for inspiration on my weight loss and fitness journey. Menu planning helps me save time and money. The initial investment of extra time searching recipes and cookbooks makes the daily grind of meal prep so much less stressful.

The best time saver i’ve ever come across is when i bake chicken breasts i make a huge package of it. I marinate them and bake them on a cookie sheet and freeze them individually. Really helps make suppers a breeze whent the meat is already done.
I like to cook meals and then freeze them. I especially like to have soup in the freezer! It’s perfect to just unthaw and have something delicious!

When I make stews, soups or chili I make double and freeze half for those nights when time is limited or I just don’t feel like cooking.

I make really flavorful Indian dishes, but used canned veggies for an inexpensive way to make the meal stretch. Yum!
